Five Things to Consider Before Choosing to Be a Single Mother in Nigeria
Being a single mother is more than a title — it’s a lifetime responsibility. In Nigeria, where there is little to no government support for raising children, it’s important to count the cost before making this decision by choice. Here are a few realities to keep in mind:
1. Financial Burden Falls on You Alone
School fees, feeding, clothing, healthcare, and emergencies will rest solely on your shoulders. Without external support, the pressure can be overwhelming. You will at times feel like you want to give up but continue to keep all hopes alive
2. No Government Safety Net
Unlike some countries where single parents receive housing aid, child benefits, or free healthcare, Nigerian single mothers often have to struggle without structured assistance. You will be all alone in the struggle
3. Social Stigma
Some people in our society wrongly assume that single mothers are women who were “badly raised” or “careless.” This bias can affect your reputation, job opportunities, and even your children’s acceptance in some circles and at times men would want to take advantage of you by forming fake love just to eat your hard-earned savings money
4. Men’s Resistance to Authority especially single mothers with men children
Some boys grow up stubborn toward the authority of a single mother, feeling they don’t need to be “raised by a woman alone.” This can create discipline challenges, especially during teenage years. These children at times need a father figure to discipline them and bring their senses back to normal
5. Emotional and Physical Strain
You’ll be the breadwinner, caregiver, and disciplinarian, all in one. The weight can drain your energy and test your mental health. You will work in the morning and at night just to provide for your children. In some cases, some people may not even be lucky and they will not be there to reap the fruit of their labour
Before making the choice, think long-term, not just about the present moment. Single motherhood can be a reality for some due to unavoidable circumstances, but choosing it without a clear plan in a society like ours can make the journey much harder than expected.
