Ọgbọnọ seed is gotten from the Ugiri tree. They are both local names for the same plant and its fruit.

In English, it is widely known as the African Bush Mango or Wild Mango (botanical name: Irvingia).

Here are a few quick facts about the relationship between the seed and the tree:

The Tree/Fruit: The tree is called Ugiri in Igbo and Oro in Yoruba. It bears a fruit that looks like a small, green mango.

The Seed: When you eat or peel away the sweet, juicy flesh of the Ugiri fruit, you are left with a hard nut. When you crack open this nut, the inner kernel/seed is what we call Ogbono (or Apon in Yoruba).

Is It the Wife's Fault?

Ada was full of joy. Her baby was ready to come.

At the hospital, the doctor examined her and said:

"Ada's pelvis is too narrow. A normal delivery may not be safe. She needs a Caesarean section (C-section)."

Her husband became angry.

"Why can't you deliver like other women?" he shouted.

Ada began to cry. 😢

The doctor quickly replied:

"Mba!" (No!) This is not her fault.

A woman does not choose the shape or size of her pelvis. Some women are naturally born with a narrow pelvis, just as people are born with different heights and body sizes.

The doctor continued:

"There is usually no way for a woman to know this by herself before labour. Sometimes it is only discovered when delivery begins."

The husband became silent.

He realized that blaming his wife for something she could not control was unfair.

That day, he learned that ezinụlọ (family) needs support, not blame.
