POLITICAL POLARIZATION OF NIGERIA: A CALL FOR UNITY AND DIALOGUE
Nigeria, a country with over 250 ethnic groups and a rich cultural heritage, is now being plagued by polarization along Party and political gladiators, not forgetting ethnic and tribal lines. A situation that was not this conspicuous during the Military era. This division has been exacerbated by politicians who exploit these differences for their own gain, thus leading to a breakdown in meaningful dialogue and understanding among citizens. The consequences of this polarization are far-reaching, affecting not only the country's politics but also its social fabric. In fact everyday we see leaders and their gullible supporters doing everything humanly possible to destroy the little fabric that unites us as a country.
Role of Politicians
Today's Politicians have thrown decorum to the dogs and this makes me wonder if Nigeria as a country is deliberately on a fast lane to Hell. Or how do you explain the present situation where citizens have been exploited along ethnic and tribal differences to mobilize support and gain power. By appealing to people's emotions and prejudices, they have created a sense of Us versus Them, pitting one group against another. Presently we have the Batist and Obidient group, with each hauling insults to supposed leaders who should be National pride of the country, for their sacrifices. But we haul insults and speak like garage agbero, with citizens viewing each other with suspicion and distrust, rather than as fellow Nigerians with shared interests and goals.
The polarization of Nigeria has had a devastating impact on society. Siblings, friends, and colleagues who once shared a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect now find themselves at odds with each other, their relationships strained by the weight of ethnic and tribal prejudices. Dialogue has become increasingly difficult, as people are more likely to listen to those who share their views.
