Tension Rises in Delta as GOMEP-NG Demands Probe Into Alleged Attack on Omo-Agege

The National President of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG), Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, has condemned the reported attack on Delta Central senatorial candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, and some of his supporters during a campaign tour of Usiephrun, Delta State.

Otiti described the incident, which reportedly left several people injured, as disturbing and unacceptable, warning that political differences must not be allowed to escalate into violence ahead of the 2026 elections.

He called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately intervene and order a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.

According to Otiti, urgent action is needed as political activities intensify, particularly with campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections expected to commence fully on August 19.

«“We need to save lives. No election is worth the life of another Nigerian. We are all brothers and sisters, and before elections, we have been living together peacefully,” Otiti said.»

Omo-Agege had alleged that eyewitness accounts and video evidence pointed to four individuals as masterminds of the incident. They were identified as Hon. Simon Mudi, popularly known as “Temple,” said to be a protocol officer to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori; Mr. Flash Oghenetega Origbon; Mr. Ochuko Origbon; and Mr. Alex Awherhurho.

Omo-Agege further alleged that the individuals are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State.

However, the allegations have not been independently established, and the named individuals are entitled to respond to the claims.

Otiti urged the police to invite those named by Omo-Agege for questioning as part of an impartial investigation, stressing that anyone found culpable should face the full weight of the law.

He also appealed to political parties, candidates, supporters and community leaders across Delta State to avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of escalating tensions.

The GOMEP-NG president further urged security agencies to act proactively to prevent a recurrence as political activities gather momentum.

He said the guild would continue to advocate peaceful political participation and responsible media coverage, stressing that the 2026 elections must take place in an atmosphere where Nigerians can exercise their democratic rights without fear of violence.

Tragedy Strikes Again: Former Boxing Prodigy Prichard Colón Dies at 33 After 10 Years of Brain Injury

Former Puerto Rican professional boxer Prichard Colón has died at the age of 33, nearly 11 years after a devastating fight left him with a severe brain injury.

Colón passed away on Thursday, August 13, with the heartbreaking news announced by his father and former coach, Richard Colón, in a Facebook post.

“Good morning my people. I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world, now he is in a better world,” his father wrote.

He thanked those who had supported the family with prayers and revealed that he had done everything possible to fulfil his son’s dream of visiting Puerto Rico.

Colón was once regarded as one of boxing’s brightest prospects. The former junior middleweight built an impressive 16-0 professional record, including 13 knockouts, before tragedy struck in October 2015.

During his bout against American boxer Terrel Williams at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia, Colón suffered repeated blows to the back of the head.

After being knocked down twice in the ninth round, his corner stopped the fight. He was rushed to hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a subdural hematoma and performed emergency surgery.

The young boxer subsequently spent 221 days in a coma. He never regained the ability to walk or speak and remained dependent on his family and rehabilitation for the rest of his life.

His devastating injury also had an impact on boxing. In 2016, the World Boxing Council introduced the “Prichard Colón Rule,” reinforcing a zero-tolerance approach to punches to the back of the head.

In 2017, Colón’s parents reportedly filed a $50 million lawsuit against the ringside doctor and promoters associated with the fight.

Nearly a decade after the tragedy that changed his life forever, Prichard Colón has now passed away, leaving behind a story that continues to resonate deeply within the boxing world.
