Anambra Woman Amputated After Bus Accident, Abandoned by Fiancรฉ Weeks After Traditional Introduction
Loveth Sunday, a 27-year-old hairstylist and perfume seller from Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, has shared her harrowing story of survival, loss, and resilience after a devastating road accident that claimed her left leg and ended her engagement.
The incident occurred on April 12, 2019, in front of the Oraifite Police Station. Sunday was standing by the roadside on her way to Onitsha to buy items for a sibling when a bus with brake failure veered off the road and struck three people. Two individuals died in the crash, while Sunday survived but sustained severe injuries.
She was rushed to several hospitals by sympathisers but was reportedly rejected by five facilities before receiving treatment at the sixth. Sunday spent five days in a coma. Upon regaining consciousness, doctors informed her that both legs were at risk of amputation, but one was ultimately saved. Her left leg, described as โdeadโ and decaying due to infection, required amputation to prevent the spread of bacteria to her heart, which could have been fatal.
Her parents initially resisted the procedure, shocked by the severity of the situation, but eventually consented after medical warnings. Sunday was later transferred to Uzondu Orthopaedic Hospital in Ojoto, Anambra State, where the amputation was performed. The family reportedly spent over N2.5 million on treatment after an initial deposit of N350,000.
Just three weeks earlier, on March 23, 2019, Sunday had her traditional introduction ceremony with her fiancรฉ. According to her account, the man visited her in the hospital immediately after the accident but later stopped communicating. While still hospitalised, he informed her that he was no longer interested in the marriage.
โI thank God I did not give up or die,โ Sunday said. โI was expecting him to encourage me... but I encouraged myself by believing in God that things will surely get better.โ
She also expressed disappointment over the limited support from some friends, noting that her best friend never visited or checked on her. Her parents and seven siblings, from a humble background, have provided emotional support but limited financial assistance. Sunday is the fifth child and first daughter in the family.
The driver of the bus did not visit the hospital. His brother and others brought only N50,000 as support, claiming the family had sold land to bury the two deceased victims. No further compensation was paid.
Now living with a physical disability, Sunday uses crutches after issues with a previous prosthesis. She urgently needs a new one, with costs ranging from N850,000 for a basic model to N2.5 million for a high-quality silicone version that would allow greater mobility. She also seeks financial support to revive her small business, which helps cover medical check-ups, food, and family needs.
Before the accident, Sunday had gained admission to Anambra State University (now Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University) after her secondary education but could not proceed due to lack of funds, leading her to learn hairstyling.
She revealed having premonitions, including dreams of the accident at the same location and seeing her own obituary posters, but did not share them with others at the time.
Despite her challenges, Sunday has been seen in videos dancing and maintaining a positive spirit. She has expressed that she has given up on romantic relationships for now but remains grateful for supportive friends and her faith.
The driverโs family reportedly faced rebuke from doctors for allegedly mocking Sunday during a hospital visit.
