Masked gunmen kill Rivers politician in hotel Attack

Fear and uncertainty have gripped residents of Ebubu in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State following the killing of politician and grassroots mobiliser, Samuel Obe Ngobe, by unidentified gunmen at a hotel in the community.

The attackers, described by witnesses as two masked men, reportedly stormed the hotel and walked directly toward the victim before opening fire at close range in what appeared to be a calculated and targeted attack.

Residents said the incident threw the area into confusion as guests and workers at the hotel scampered for safety moments after gunshots rang out within the premises.

The assailants were said to have fled immediately after carrying out the attack, leaving the victim in a pool of blood while bystanders struggled to respond to the sudden violence.

Ngobe was reportedly known within local political circles and youth mobilisation structures in the area, making news of his killing spread quickly across the community.

The attack has heightened fears among residents who say violent incidents and targeted attacks have continued to create tension in parts of Rivers State in recent months.

Community members also expressed concern over the manner in which the gunmen reportedly carried out the operation without resistance before escaping from the scene.

Security operatives later arrived at the hotel to secure the area and begin preliminary investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Authorities are yet to officially disclose the motive behind the attack, but investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The incident has reignited conversations around insecurity, political violence, and the growing need for stronger security presence across vulnerable communities in the state.

Peter Obi Holds High-Level Talks on Xenophobia, Immigration in South Africa

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed that he held high-level meetings with top South African ministers and political leaders following recent concerns raised by Nigerians living in South Africa.

According to Obi, the discussions focused on immigration issues, regional cooperation, security concerns, youth unemployment, and the growing tensions affecting African foreigners, especially Nigerians residing in South Africa.

The former Anambra State governor disclosed that he met with South African Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber; Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa; and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie.

Obi explained that the meetings came shortly after engaging with members of the Nigerian community in Cape Town, where concerns about safety, peaceful coexistence, and the treatment of immigrants were reportedly raised.

He stressed the need for both Nigeria and South Africa to strengthen dialogue, promote mutual respect, and uphold the rule of law in addressing migration and social challenges affecting both nations.

Peter Obi also called for restraint, peaceful engagement, and unity among Africans, stating that violence, hate, and provocation should never replace lawful and democratic solutions.

He further noted that Africa’s progress depends on unity, economic inclusion, and protecting the dignity of every African regardless of nationality or country of residence.

The statement has since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians praising the move as a step toward diplomacy and protecting the interests of Nigerians abroad.

Reno Omokri travels to Peru to investigate allegation against Peter Obi, releases result

Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has revealed details of his trip to Peru to investigate allegations linking Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, to drug trafficking.

Omokri made the disclosure in a statement shared on X on Wednesday while responding to allegations made by former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo that Obi was involved in drug trafficking activities linked to a woman imprisoned in Peru.

According to him, his findings showed that the allegations against Obi were false after he visited a women’s prison in Lima and met with authorities in Peru during the investigation.

He explained that the trip to Peru came shortly after he travelled to the United States in September 2022 to verify the academic records of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Chicago State University.

Omokri stated that, despite the findings being against his political interests at the time, he publicly released videos, documents and statements confirming that Tinubu attended and graduated from the institution.

He added that after concluding his investigation in Chicago, he proceeded to Peru to probe allegations that Obi sponsored a female drug courier who was later arrested and allegedly implicated him during trial proceedings.

According to him, he visited the prison facility in Lima with a witness and also interacted with authorities in the South American country while carrying out the investigation.

Omokri further stated that he later contacted Dokubo and advised him to stop repeating the allegations because there was no evidence to support them.

He also urged political actors ahead of the 2027 election to avoid recycling claims he said had already been debunked.

Omokri maintained that he personally funded the investigations out of what he described as patriotism and commitment to justice.

The statement partly reads, “I proceeded to Peru to investigate this claim you just made against Peter Obi. I went to the women’s prison in Lima, Peru, with a witness who is still alive and a video camera. I also visited authorities in that country, and confirmed that the story that Peter Obi is a drug baron who sponsored a female drug mule to Peru, and that the girl was arrested, tried, and implicated him during her trial is false. I also granted an interview to Arise TV right from Cusco, Peru. This was on Tuesday, November 22, 2022.

“I thereafter called you on the phone and told you not to make the allegation anymore, because it was not true, and it is morally wrong to accuse a man of a crime he is innocent of. You may recall that you agreed with me.

“As we approach the 2027 election, please can we all refrain from recycling these allegations, which I have already debunked.

“I spent my money and time to establish the facts. Nobody gave me a dime. I did this because of patriotism and commitment to justice, even when it is against my political interests. So it is rather disconcerting to see these allegations being recycled.”

Girlfriend learning to drive kills three children in Port Harcourt

A lady being taught how to drive by her boyfriend has killed three children in the Ogbunabali axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The tragedy happened when the lady behind the wheel rammed into the residence of Mrs. Amarachi Promise Esomonu, killing her three children.

A source who resides in the area said the incident occurred on May 15, adding that the children were aged 10, four and three respectively.

“They were at home in Ogbunabali when this happened. A young man was teaching his girlfriend how to drive. So, as she was driving, people started shouting. Before we knew it, the car had rammed into the woman’s house.

“That was how her three children lost their lives. It is very painful, and the mother has been crying because the children were all going to school,” the source stated.

Meanwhile, in a viral video seen by our correspondent on Tuesday, the distraught woman was seen sobbing uncontrollably and seeking help.

Esomonu raised the alarm that the culprits are not saying anything, pointing out that she thinks of the children every time.

The distraught woman further revealed that the alarm she sets to start preparing her children for school every weekday morning keeps ringing, but she can no longer find her children.

“Every day I wake up in the morning and remember them. Every day my alarm rings, but there are no kids for me to dress for school.

“Their killers are comfortable. They aren’t saying anything,” the grieving mother said while fighting back tears.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered an investigation.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased toddlers, she said the State Police Command is saddened by the tragic incident, which she said has generated “widespread grief and concern” within the state.

Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said CP Adepoju extended his condolences to the family and assured that every necessary step would be taken to ensure that the family gets justice in the matter.

The statement reads: “The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened by the tragic incident which reportedly claimed the lives of three children from the same family.

No NERD Compliance Certificate, No National Service – NYSC DG Warns

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has reaffirmed that only graduates with a compliance certificate from the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank will be mobilized for national service.

The NYSC said the move is part of efforts to curb certificate fraud and ensure that only genuine graduates are cleared for the scheme.

The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this during his keynote address at the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Mobilization Workshop held in Abuja.

He urged Corps Producing Institutions to properly sensitize their students and ensure full compliance with the Federal Government’s directive.

According to him, the mobilization process should not be left to NYSC alone, noting that regulatory bodies, security agencies, and relevant ministries must support the process through policy guidance, capacity building, and enforcement of compliance standards.

“When we work in synergy, we ease the path for our Prospective Corps Members, ensuring that their transition from student to national service is smooth, transparent, and credible,” Nafiu said.

He further called on stakeholders to confront existing challenges and work together to build a more accountable, transparent, and efficient mobilization system.

Earlier, the NYSC Director of Corps Mobilization, Mrs. Rachel Ideawor, described the Pre-Mobilization Workshop as an important platform for strengthening collaboration between NYSC, Corps Producing Institutions, and other key stakeholders.

She urged Student Affairs Officers to carry out their duties with diligence and integrity, stressing that information submitted for mobilization must accurately reflect the true profiles of Prospective Corps Members.

The workshop was attended by representatives of JAMB, NUC, NBTE, the Federal Ministry of Education, NERD, SIDMACH Technologies, and 266 Student Affairs Officers from various Corps Producing Institutions across the country.

No case of Ebola virus in Nigeria- NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has assured Nigerians that no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease has been recorded in the country

In a statement released on Sunday, May 17, the NCDC Director-General, Jide Idris, said it was closely monitoring developments following the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a recently confirmed imported case in Uganda.

According to the NCDC, authorities in DR Congo and Uganda have already activated emergency response measures, including enhanced surveillance, laboratory testing, contact tracing, infection prevention and public risk communication.

The agency said Nigeria had also intensified its preparedness efforts due to increased regional movement across African borders.

“Due to increasing regional movement across countries, NCDC is closely monitoring the situation and working with relevant stakeholders, including the Port Health Service under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to ensure continued vigilance and preparedness within the public health system,” the statement read

The WHO had earlier warned that the Bundibugyo strain differs from the more common Ebola-Zaire variant because there are currently no approved vaccines or therapeutics specifically designed for it.

The NCDC urged Nigerians to remain calm, avoid misinformation and maintain regular hygiene practices, particularly frequent handwashing. It also advised residents to avoid contact with bodily fluids of sick persons and dead animals or bushmeat from unknown sources. Healthcare workers were advised to maintain a high index of suspicion for patients showing symptoms consistent with Ebola, especially those with relevant travel history, while strictly adhering to infection prevention and control measures.

The agency encouraged Nigerians to promptly report unusual illnesses to the nearest health facility and rely only on updates from official public health authorities.

Panic In Borno As Suspected Boko Haram Fighters Kidnap 42 Schoolchildren

Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists have reportedly abducted 42 pupils and students following a deadly attack on a school in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack occurred on Friday, May 15, 2026, when armed insurgents invaded M***a Primary and Junior Secondary School in the early hours of the morning, causing panic as students and residents fled for safety.

Senator Ali Ndume, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that 28 pupils were abducted from the primary section, four students from the Government Day Secondary School, while 10 other children were reportedly taken from nearby homes, bringing the total number of abducted victims to 42.

Ndume described the attack as heartbreaking and appealed to troops of Operation HADIN KAI and other security agencies to intensify rescue efforts to ensure the safe return of the victims.

Local residents said the terrorists stormed the community on motorcycles and opened attacks around the school area while classes were ongoing. Several students reportedly escaped into nearby bushes during the chaos, while many others remain unaccounted for.

Authorities are still carrying out headcount rescue operations as fears continue to grow over the safety of the abducted children.

The latest attack has once again raised concerns over worsening insecurity in northeastern Nigeria and the recurring targeting of schools by terrorist groups operating around the Sambisa Forest axis.

EFCC Arrests Energy Commission DG Mustapha Abdullahi Over Alleged N500 Billion Money Laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), over alleged money laundering offences involving more than N500 billion.

Abdullahi was picked up in Abuja on Wednesday and is currently in EFCC custody for further investigation.

The arrest follows a petition filed in December 2025 by civil society organisation Network Against Corruption and Drug Trafficking (NACAT), which accused Abdullahi of a “well-coordinated and brazen scheme” involving:

-The illegal award of solar streetlight contracts worth hundreds of millions to five companies allegedly owned and controlled by the same individuals

-All five companies were reportedly registered within a single week in late October and early November 2023

-The companies allegedly shared the same Abuja addresses and directors

-Nigeria’s procurement laws were brazenly violated in the award process.
