GOSPEL OF THE DAY

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 23:.13-22)

At that time: Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor allow those who would enter to go in. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? So he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; and he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it; and he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits up on it.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke (Luke 13:22-30)

At that time: Jesus went on his way through towns and villages, teaching, and journeying towards Jerusalem. And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, “Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the householder has risen up and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us.’ “He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!’ There you will weep and gnash your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves thrust out. And men will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

THE SAINT OF THE DAY
SAINT BARTHOLOME THE APOSTLE
August 24

The Apostle S. Bartolomew was a Galilean and probably a fisherman like most of the Apostles. Chosen by Jesus, Nathanael, his original name, he too had the happy fortune of feeding his soul with the words of life that came from the blessed lip of the Divine Master throughout his preaching, and to be a witness to his miracles.

Together with the other Apostles, he preached the Gospel in Judea, performing miracles and driving demons out of their bones. On the day of Pentecost, he also received the fullness of the Holy Spirit, after he boldly announced the S. Gospel to the Jews and suffer like the other Apostles drowned and beaten for Jesus Christ's sake.

Rejected by the Jews, S. Bartolomeo took himself first to Libya, then to Arabia, East Indies and Greater Armenia. His word, combined with a mortified life and the spirit of prayer, worked immense good.

Celebrated especially the conversion of King Polymy and his queen consort.

However much zeal aroused the jealousy and fury of the idolaters, who, driven by diabolical hatred, plotted against him. To better succeed in the sacrilegic attempt, they drew to their side the king's brother, Astiage, who chained the Holy Apostle and condemned him to be escorted alive.

While they were performing this work, St. Bartolomeo scolded the Lord because he wanted to forgive his perpetrators. The manigoldi, after stripping his skin, decapitated him.

The body of the Holy Apostle was buried in Albanopol, where it remained until the Emperor Otto II had it transported to Rome.

A church was built for him on Tiberine Island and his body is under the main altar, in a porphid sarcophagus.

PRACTICE. All adversity, when compared to the eternal rewards that will be returned for them, are nothing but spiderweb, shadow and smoke (S. Giovanni Crisostomo).

PRAYER. O God almighty and eternal, that on this day you allow us to celebrate the feast of your blessed Apostle Bartolomeo and for that you fill us with holy joy, deh! give your Church to love what it believes and practice what it teaches.

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY . Feast of St. Bartholomew the Apostle, commonly identified with Natanael. Born in Cana of Galilee, he was led by Philip to Christ Jesus near the Jordan and the Lord called him to follow him, adding him to the Twelve. After the Ascension of the Lord it is reported that he preached the Gospel of the Lord in India, where he would have been crowned by martyrdom.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel of Matthew 2
23,1-12.

At that time Jesus addressed the crowds and his disciples, saying:
"On Moses’ seat the scribes and Pharisees sat.
When they tell you, do it and observe it, but don't do it according to their actions, because they say and they don't do.
They actually tie heavy burdens and impose them on people’s shoulders, but they don’t want to move them even with a finger.
They do all their works to be admired by men: they stretch their threads and lengthen their fringes;
they love places of honor in the invitations, first seats in the synagogues
And the greetings in the squares, as well as hearing people call themselves "rabbi"
But don't let yourselves be called "rabbi", because there is only one teacher and you are all brothers.
And do not call anyone “father” on earth, for there is only one your Father, the one in heaven.
And don't let yourselves be called "teachers", because there is only one Master, the Christ.
The greatest among you shall be your servant;
but whoever greets himself will be humbled, and whoever lowers himself will be lifted up. "

🔔TODAY'S GOSPEL📖

From the Gospel according to LUKE
1,26-38

At that time, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin, promised bride of a man of the house of David, named Joseph. The virgin's name was Mary. Entering her, he said, "Be of good cheer, full of grace: the Lord is with you."
At these words she was very upset and wondered what was the meaning of a greeting like this. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive a son and give birth to him, and you will call him Jesus.” He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David and he will reign forever over the house of Jacob and his kingdom will have no end.
Then Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I do not know a man?” ». The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you with his shadow. Therefore whoever will be born will be holy and will be called the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, in her old age she also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month to her, which was called barren: nothing is impossible with God.
Then Mary said, “Here is the handmaid of the Lord: let it happen to me according to your word.” And the angel passes away from her

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 22:1-14)

At that time: Again Jesus spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.’ But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burnt their city. “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the streets, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and quashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Gospel of the Day (Matthew 19,23-30)

Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said, "Who then can be saved?"
Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings this is impossible, but for God all things are possible."
Then Peter said to him in reply, "We have given up everything and followed you. What will there be for us?"
Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."

TODAY'S GOSPEL

From the Gospel of Matthew 2
19,13-15.

At that time children were brought to Jesus to lay hands on them and pray; but the disciples shouted at them.
But Jesus said to them, “Let the little children come to me, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
And after laying hands on them, he left.
