🔔TODAY'S GOSPEL📖

From the Gospel of John
11,19-27.

At that time, many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them for their brother.
Martha, knowing that Jesus was coming, went to meet him; instead Mary was sitting in the house.
Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died!”
But even now I know that whatever you will ask God, he will give it to you.
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.”
Marta answered: "I know he will rise again on the last day."
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, though they die, yet shall they live;
whoever lives and believes in me, will not die forever. Do you believe this? ».
He answered, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God who is to come into the world.”

🔔TODAY'S GOSPEL📖

From the Gospel of Matthew 2
13,31-35.

At that time Jesus told the crowd another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is compared to a mustard seed that a man takes and sows in his field.
It is the smallest of all the seeds but, once grown, it is bigger than the other legumes and becomes a tree, so much that the birds of the sky come and nest between its branches».
Another parable he told them: “The kingdom of heaven can be compared to the yeast, which a woman took and kneaded with three measures of flour so that it all gets fermented.”
All these things Jesus said to the crowd in parables, and he didn't speak to them but in parables,
so that what was said by the prophet might be fulfilled: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will proclaim hidden things from the foundation of the world.”

🕯 ✨ THE SAINT OF THE DAY 🕯 ✨
HOLY SEVEN SLEEPERS OF EPHESUS
July 27

Maximilian, Giamblicus, Martinian, John, Dionysius, Exacustodian and Antonino were seven young people very devoted to the Lord God who lived in the middle of the third century.

Emperor Decius’ edict that all his citizens offered sacrifices to the gods had already sacrificed many Christians who refused. So also the seven young men were summoned to trial and sentenced to death for their Christian faith. Temporarily released, the seven young men fled the city and hid in a cave on Mount Ochlon, where they spent their time praying in preparation for martyrdom.

Learning where the young people were hiding, the emperor ordered that the entrance to the cave be sealed with stones, so that the saints died of hunger and thirst.

Two centuries after all the persecutions against Christians had ceased and Christianity had become the official faith of the Empire. The seven young men were found by the owner of the land on which Mount Ochlon was located when his workers opened the entrance to the cave with the intention of building a sheep. Thus it was discovered that the Lord had kept the young people alive, and they woke up from their sleep, not knowing that almost two hundred years had passed.

Their bodies and clothes were completely intact from the decomposition. Giamblico returned to Ephesus and discovered that God had allowed this miracle to end the controversy concerning the resurrection of the dead. The emperor also went to Ephesus to examine this miracle and after talking to them, he allowed them to return to their cave, without the royal honors he intended to pay them, and there the young fell asleep forever.

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY . Commemoration of the holy Seven Sleepers of Ephesus, who, as it is said, were martyred, are resting in peace, awaiting the day of resurrection.

James, the brother of John the Evangelist, was the first Apostle to be martyred. He was beheaded by order of Herod of Agrippa. The Gospels tell us that the two brothers left their father, Zebedee, and followed Jesus as soon as He called out to them.

James was one of the three Apostles who were particularly close to the Lord. He was there with the Lord and his brother, John, and Peter at the Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane.

He is known as James "the Greater" to distinguish him from the other Apostle by the same name. The title has little to do with his function or the people's regard for him. Rather, it was a term indicating that he was the elder of the two.

He is the patron saint of Spain and of pilgrims. In northwestern Spain, he is venerated at Santiago de Compostela, a mediaeval pilgrimage site that is still very popular today.

🔔TODAY'S GOSPEL📖

From the Gospel of Matthew 2
20,20-28.

At that time the mother of the children of Zebedee came to Jesus with her children, and she prostrated herself to ask him something.
He said to her what do you want? ». He answered, “Tell these children of mine, one on your right hand and one on your left, in your kingdom.”
Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you ask. Can you drink the goblet I'm about to drink? ». They tell him, "We can do it."
And he answered, “You will drink from my cup; but it is not for me to give you to sit on my right hand or to my left, but for those for whom my Father has prepared.”
The other ten, when they heard this, went against the two brothers;
but Jesus, calling them to himself, said, “The leaders of the nations, as you know, dominate over them, and the great ones exercise power over them.”
It shall not be so among you; but whoever will become great among you will be your servant,
and whoever would like to be first among you, will be your slave;
just like the Son of Man, who did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Gospel of the Day ( Matthew 13:10-17)

The disciples approached Jesus and said,
"Why do you speak to the crowd in parables?"
He said to them in reply,
"Because knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven
has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted.
To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich;
from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
This is why I speak to them in parables, because
they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.
Isaiah's prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:

You shall indeed hear but not understand,
you shall indeed look but never see.
Gross is the heart of this people,
they will hardly hear with their ears,
they have closed their eyes,
lest they see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their hearts and be converted
and I heal them.

"But blessed are your eyes, because they see,
and your ears, because they hear.
Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people
longed to see what you see but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear but did not hear it."
