Former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has said he would reopen Nigeria’s land borders with neighbouring countries if elected president.
Atiku said the border closures had severely affected economic activities in northern states bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger Republic and Benin Republic.
According to him, many young Nigerians who depended on legitimate cross-border trade have been pushed into financial difficulties as a result of the restrictions.
He said reopening the borders would help revive cross-border commerce and restore economic opportunities for affected communities.
“The Northern states bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic have suffered greatly from the closure of these borders. Many young people engaged in legitimate cross-border trade have been pushed into bankruptcy. That is why I said I will reopen the borders,” Atiku said.
