FG Expands Forest Guards Initiative to 10 States to Tackle Kidnapping, Banditry

ABUJA — In a renewed effort to strengthen national security and curb violent crimes, the Federal Government has expanded the Presidential Forest Guards Initiative to 10 states across the federation.

The latest phase of the initiative includes Kaduna, Edo, and Kogi States, where over 2,000 newly recruited forest guards have successfully completed intensive training. This raises the total number of trained personnel under the programme to more than 9,000 nationwide.

The expansion is part of the Federal Government's ongoing strategy to reclaim Nigeria's forests from criminal elements and combat the rising incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes.

According to government officials, the trained forest guards will work in collaboration with conventional security agencies to improve surveillance, intelligence gathering, and rapid response operations in forested areas that have become safe havens for armed criminals.

The initiative is expected to enhance the protection of rural communities, improve public safety, and reinforce the government's commitment to restoring peace and security across the country.

ICPC Secures Conviction of Ex-Reps Member Onadeko, Court Declares Legislative Aides Are Public Officers

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Onamusi Onadeko, in a landmark judgment that clarifies the legal status of legislative aides under Nigeria's anti-corruption laws.

Hon. Onadeko, who represented Ogun East Federal Constituency between 1999 and 2003, was prosecuted over allegations linked to the award and ex*****on of constituency projects worth ₦68.7 million while serving as a Senior Legislative Aide to the late Senator Buruji Kashamu.

According to the ICPC, Onadeko used two private firms—Stanton Engineering Limited and Haines and Baines Limited—to execute contracts involving the procurement of ambulances, hospital equipment and drugs, as well as the construction of classroom blocks across communities in Ogun East Senatorial District. The Commission argued that the arrangement breached Sections 12 and 19 of the ICPC Act, 2000, which prohibit public officers from using their offices for personal gain.

The anti-graft agency also accused the former lawmaker of making contradictory statements regarding his directorship of Haines and Baines Limited during the course of investigations.

In his defence, Onadeko argued that he was not a public officer because his appointment as a legislative aide was temporary and non-pensionable, insisting that the relevant provisions of the ICPC Act did not apply to him.

However, delivering judgment on July 30, 2026, Justice Chizoba Oji of the Federal Capital Territory High Court dismissed the argument. The court held that legislative aides are public officers, relying on the defendant's appointment letter and the Supreme Court's decision in Federal Government of Nigeria v. Farouk Lawan.

Justice Oji convicted Onadeko on the count relating to making inconsistent statements but discharged and acquitted him on several other counts. He was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with an option of a ₦50,000 fine.

The ruling is regarded as a significant precedent in Nigeria's anti-corruption jurisprudence. It establishes that Personal Assistants (PAs), Special Assistants (SAs), Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), Legislative Aides (LAs), Senior Legislative Aides (SLAs), and similar political appointees who receive salaries or allowances from public funds are public officers under the ICPC Act, regardless of whether their appointments are temporary, fixed-term, or non-pensionable.

INEC Rejects Manual Submission of Jonathan's Name, Insists on Online Candidate Upload

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the manual submission of candidates by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that all nominations for the 2027 general elections must be uploaded exclusively through its designated electronic portal.

The controversy arose after the Tanimu Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the PDP reportedly submitted the names of former President Goodluck Jonathan and about 1,470 other candidates in hard-copy form, bypassing INEC's online nomination system.

The faction claimed it resorted to manual submission after INEC allegedly denied it access to the electronic portal. PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong argued that the Electoral Act does not prohibit physical submission of candidates' names.

However, INEC's Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Ita-Messi, dismissed the submission, stating that the commission recognizes only one leadership structure for each political party and will not accept candidate nominations submitted outside its official online portal.

The development has further deepened the leadership crisis within the PDP, with the Turaki-led faction threatening legal action should INEC publish a candidate list submitted by any rival faction.
