Reading through the Saturday Vanguard this morning left my heart heavy. The figures and reports on drug abuse in Nigeria are not just alarming—they are an outright emergency that demands our immediate attention as parents and guardians.
According to the reports, an estimated 14.3 million Nigerians aged 15 to 64 have used illicit substances. Experts like Dr. Martin Awogie warn that the situation has escalated so severely that up to 1 in 4 Nigerians may now be affected. Behind these cold statistics are real lives, devastated families, and a generation on the brink.
Experts point to key drivers pushing our young people into this dark tunnel:
* Peer Pressure and Curiosity: The desperate need to fit in, stay awake for studies, or gain artificial confidence in schools and neighborhoods.
* Socioeconomic Stress: Overwhelming economic hardship, high unemployment, frustration, and a dangerous breakdown in traditional community support systems that leave youths seeking escapism.
A Special Call to Parents
As much as the government, NDLEA, and NAFDAC have crucial roles to play, the frontline of this battle is our home.
We can no longer afford to be too busy, too tired, or too disconnected. Addiction does not knock on a door before entering; it creeps in silently through the gaps in our attention.
Standing up to our parental challenges today means:
* Being Present: Creating an open, judgment-free space where our children can talk to us about their fears, frustrations, and daily pressures.
* Watching the Signs: Paying close attention to sudden behavioral shifts, unusual mood swings, changes in friendship circles, and unexplained financial needs.
* Rebuilding the Village: Bringing back intentional parenting and community watchfulness because it truly takes a village to raise a child.
We cannot afford to lose an entire generation of Nigerian youths to avoidable destruction. Let us rise, lean in, and fight for our children before it is too late.
What steps do you think we, as parents, need to take right now to reclaim our homes and protect the younger generation? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇
