It’s rather surprising that some people can’t but bellyache at any mention of what the institution of the Alaafin represents in the history of the Yoruba Nation!

I make bold to assert here that the YORUBA NATION is the end product of the empire building adventures of the Alaafins!

What we had previously were the Oyos, Ijebu’s, Egbas, Ijesas and others functioning as smaller units before the Era of Oyo Kingdom.

It is the legendary efforts of the Alaafins that aggregated and metamorphosed into the larger, stronger and eminent YORUBA NATION of today!
To a lot of our people however, they would rather want our collective history defined by the political conflicts of the 50s which greatly diminishes the who we are as a people.

As apparent in Sola Fasure’s fb post in reference, it’s difficult for some people to believe that Ibadan and Ogbomosho were part of Alaafin’s Oyo and that the Olubadan, Oba Adebimpe and Soun Ajagungbade were crowned with beaded crown only recently in 1976 by Brigadier David Madayese Jembewon.

According to Professor Banji Akintoye, an Ekiti Born authority on Yoruba History , the legends of the Alaafin and Oyo should be a thing of pride to all Yorubas. It is rather surprising that some of us still relish and even celebrate the raid of Fulanis on Yorubaland.

Whoever possesses a different and superior narrative on the origin of the YORUBAS can come forward with it and enrich our existing body of knowledge.

If there is any institution that have established and exercised suzerainty over and beyond the precincts of the Yoruba country, IT IS THE ALAAFIN!

If you ever want the sweetest Oriki in Yorubaland, it is the Oriki of the Alaafin of Oyo, the Paramount Custodian of Yoruba Culture and Tradition.

Kole ba di ija, ko le ba di aapon...

Owo ni Eko ni, Awa Oyo loni Oba. Ipekun Oba, Olori Oba Ile Yoruba.

I keep affirming that voices can even say there is initiation in 3 days, like a miojo, 3 minutes; But you can't claim that it is TRADITIONAL to do it even if it is TRADitional YORUBA.

You can even say there is initiation in 3 days but you cannot claim it is TRADITIONAL YORUBA
Did the loruba say that to you? Did you ask him if his great-grandfather or great-grandfather was initiated in 3 days? Have you ever asked priests if they do the same things to their carnal sons or is it just us foreigners?
We who come from candomblé, who spend 21 or more days collected for an initiation, we hear from our elders that this was TRADITION, a habit maintained since the inception of candomblé as a religion.
In this sense, I repeat, as indignation: where and why do we stop believing in this maximum?
Would spiritual fast-food be the new movement of the decade, the rush to be a priest in Brazil, the false validation given by the lorubas with titles received in the funds of the houses, without the prerogative of going to the market to show the local population that there is one more effective member in that locality or family?
If the entry into the religious community, the spiritual family, does not keep the commitment to the values and principles of that tradition, this "initiation" cannot be called neither true nor traditional.
If we do not stop to question and question this trade of faith and poor initiations, we will end the walk of a religion, anticipating its end.
