Lydia was the girl everyone knew.
Not because she was loud.
Not because she was popular.
And definitely not because she tried to be.
She was known for one thing.
First position.
Every term, every exam, every test…
Lydia was number one.
Her name sat proudly at the top of the class result sheet.
And Lydia intended to keep it that way.
Until one Monday morning…
Everything changed.
The classroom was unusually noisy.
Students were talking when their teacher walked in with someone standing beside her.
A boy.
Tall.
Confident.
A neatly pressed uniform.
And the kind of smile that immediately annoyed Lydia.
TEACHER:
“Class, we have a new student joining us today.”
The boy looked around the classroom.
Then his eyes landed on Lydia.
He smiled.
TEACHER:
“His name is Ethan.”
Ethan nodded.
“Good morning.”
The class responded.
But Lydia barely looked at him.
Until the teacher said:

“Ethan, you can sit beside Lydia.”
Lydia's head snapped up.
LYDIA:
“Beside me?”
Ethan walked toward her desk.
He pulled out the chair.
Sat down.
Then leaned toward her.
ETHAN:
“Don't worry. I won't bite.”
Lydia stared at him.
LYDIA:
“I wasn't worried.”
Ethan smiled.
ETHAN:
“You look worried.”
LYDIA:
“You look annoying.”
The students around them burst into laughter.
Ethan laughed.
ETHAN:
“Oh… I think we're going to get along perfectly.”
Lydia rolled her eyes.
She had no idea how right he was.
Two weeks later, the teacher returned their first mathematics test.
Teacher:
“Excellent performance from the class.”
Everyone waited for the results.
Then she smiled.
Teacher:
“First position…”
She paused.
Lydia sat up straight.
She already knew.
Or at least she thought she did.
Teacher:
“Ethan.”
The classroom exploded.
Lydia froze.
She looked at Ethan.
He slowly turned toward her.
Then smiled.
ETHAN:
“Looks like someone has competition.”
Lydia's eyes narrowed.
LYDIA:
“Enjoy it while it lasts.”
ETHAN:
“Oh, I plan to.”
He leaned closer.
ETHAN:
“Maybe you should start studying harder.”
Lydia clenched her pencil.
LYDIA:
“Maybe you should start praying.”
Ethan laughed.
And just like that…
The war began.
From that day forward, Lydia and Ethan became academic enemies.
If Lydia scored 98…
Ethan scored 99.
If Ethan scored 99…
Lydia scored 100.
They competed over everything.
Mathematics.
English.
Physics.
Debates.
Quiz competitions.
Even who could answer the teacher's questions first.
Their classmates started calling them:
“The Academic Couple.”
Lydia hated the name.
Especially when Ethan heard it.
ETHAN:
“You know, Lydia… they're actually right.”
LYDIA:
“Right about what?”
He smiled.
ETHAN:
“Nothing.”
“Yet.”
Lydia threw an eraser at him.
He ducked.
The whole class laughed.
Then came the school sports competition.
Lydia was surprisingly athletic.
She joined the girls' relay team.
Ethan joined the boys' team.
During practice, they somehow ended up arguing again.
LYDIA:
“You're standing in my lane.”
ETHAN:
“It's a track, Lydia. Not your personal property.”
LYDIA:
“Move.”
ETHAN:
“Make me.”
She stared at him.
LYDIA:
“Gladly.”
She pushed past him.
Ethan laughed.
But when Lydia started running…
His smile disappeared.
She was fast.
Very fast.
And for the first time, Ethan wasn't thinking about beating her.
He was simply watching her.
During the relay race, Lydia tripped.
The entire crowd gasped.
Before anyone could react…
Ethan jumped over the barrier and ran toward her.
ETHAN:
“Lydia!”
She looked up.
Her knee was bleeding.
Ethan knelt beside her.
ETHAN:
“Are you okay?”
Lydia stared at him.
For once…
He wasn't teasing her.
He wasn't smiling.
He looked genuinely worried.
LYDIA:
“I'm fine.”
Ethan gently helped her stand.
Their eyes met.
For a few seconds…
Neither of them spoke.
The noise of the crowd seemed to disappear.
Lydia's heart started beating strangely fast.
And Ethan felt something he couldn't explain.
Then Lydia pulled her hand away.
LYDIA:
“I can walk myself.”
Ethan smiled again.
ETHAN:
“Still stubborn.”
She rolled her eyes.
LYDIA:
“Still annoying.”
But this time…
Neither of them sounded angry.
That evening, Lydia sat alone in her room studying.
She opened her mathematics book.
But she couldn't concentrate.
Her mind kept returning to one moment.
Ethan holding her hand.
She shook her head.
LYDIA:
“Why am I thinking about him?”
Meanwhile…
Across town…
Ethan was lying on his bed.
He stared at his ceiling.
Then smiled to himself.
His little sister walked into the room.
SISTER:
“Why are you smiling?”
Ethan immediately stopped.
ETHAN:
“I'm not.”
She looked suspicious.
SISTER:
“You're thinking about a girl.”
Ethan laughed.
ETHAN:
“Don't be ridiculous.”
His sister smiled.
SISTER:
“What's her name?”
Ethan remained silent.
Then, almost unconsciously…
He whispered:
“Lydia.”
