Senate Scrutinizes RSIEC Nominee Michael Ekpai Over Non-Indigene Status Concerns

On June 17, 2025, Michael Ekpai, a retired official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from Cross River State, appeared before the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Emergency Rule in Rivers State for screening.

Senators raised constitutional concerns about his eligibility due to his non-indigene status, questioning whether a non-indigene can legally head a state electoral body.

Ekpai argued that no law prohibits a non-indigene from serving as RSIEC Chairman and emphasized that his lack of local ties would ensure impartiality.

He highlighted his 35 years of experience at INEC, claiming a record of integrity and adherence to due process.

The Senate committee, while acknowledging his qualifications, decided to review legal provisions to ensure compliance with the Nigerian Constitution and Rivers State laws before proceeding with confirmation.
