Looming Fubara Return: Move to Extend Rivers Emergency Rule Collapses as Tinubu Orders Ibas to Submit Handover Note

The push to extend the emergency rule in Rivers State has collapsed after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the state’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (retd.), to submit a comprehensive handover note ahead of the expiration of his tenure.

The directive came after a high-stakes meeting on Wednesday night, which ended attempts by powerful forces in the National Assembly to secure a three-week extension that would have allowed Ibas to remain in office beyond the scheduled transition date.

President Tinubu’s order requires Ibas to present a detailed handover covering inherited funds, accrued revenues, expenditures, and ongoing projects before stepping aside.

The development clears the path for the anticipated return of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, and the Rivers State House of Assembly on September 18, 2025, marking the end of months of emergency rule in the state.

This emergency rule, declared on March 18, 2025, will officially end six months later on September 18, 2025. With Tinubu’s latest directive, Rivers State now prepares for the restoration of democratic institutions after months of uncertainty.

Obi’s One-Term Promise A Political Strategy To Avoid Losing Votes In The North — Kenneth Okonkwo

He said any party serious about defeating an incumbent must agree that its presidential candidate would serve for one term so that no side will feel cheated.

A member of the opposition coalition, Kenneth Okonkwo, has described the promise by a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, to serve for one term if elected as President as a political strategy to curry favour with the North.

Okonkwo explained that Obi knew that if he did not make the promise, he would lose votes from the northern region of the country.

“So I brought the theory as a way for any opposition party to inspire Nigerians to know that each side will not lose when they make any choice, whether north or south.

“So, it was even Atiku Abubakar that first of all said he was going to do one term, then Peter Obi now keyed into it because he knows that if he, as a younger person, does not make that promise, he loses the entire North,” he said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

“So it’s purely a political strategy to say, ‘Look, I am not going to cut the eight years. I’m not going to shortchange you. So if I am elected, I will just do only four years to complete the eight years of the South.’ So that’s just the whole idea about it,” he added.

Court Clears Goodluck Jonathan to Contest 2027 Presidential Election

A Federal High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan is constitutionally eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Justice Isa Dashen ruled that Jonathan’s swearing-in in 2010, following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, was not by election but a constitutional succession. He explained that Jonathan had only been elected once, in 2011, which does not violate the constitutional limit of being elected president twice.

The court further held that the 2017 constitutional amendment, which took effect in June 2018 and bars any person who completed another’s tenure from being elected more than once, could not be applied retroactively to Jonathan since his situation occurred before the amendment came into effect.

The judgment, which has not been challenged, clears the way for Jonathan to legally participate in the 2027 presidential race, expected to take place in February 2027.
