3 New Units in CSS (Explained Visually) 🚀 Ever noticed how 100vh doesn’t always fill the screen, especially on mobile? That’s because not all vh units are created equal! CSS now has 3 new viewport units to solve this problem: 1️⃣ lvh – Large Viewport Height Represents the maximum height of the viewport (with toolbars hidden). Use this when you want full screen coverage after scrolling. 2️⃣ svh – Small Viewport Height Represents the smallest possible height (with toolbars visible). Good for layouts that must stay visible when toolbars are open. 3️⃣ dvh – Dynamic Viewport Height Automatically switches between lvh and svh based on browser state. These new units help you avoid layout bugs and build more stable mobile designs. Try them out and see the difference instantly!

For the longest time, I saw design as a distraction…
As a developer, my mindset was simple: “Let me focus on writing clean, efficient code and leave the pixels and colors to the designers.”

But over time, something changed. I started to realize that understanding design wasn’t pulling me away from development, it was sharpening my skills as a developer.

Learning the basics of design has helped me: ✅ Better interpret and implement the designer’s intent
✅ Communicate more effectively in cross-functional teams
✅ Anticipate UX considerations before they even hit the mock up
✅ Bring more empathy and intentionality into how I build features Now, instead of just “translating Figma to code,” I collaborate and resonate with design decisions.

If you’re a developer and you’ve been avoiding design, I understand. But I’ll tell you this: the moment I leaned into it even just a little, it elevated the way I work.

So I’m curious: How has learning design (even just the basics) impacted your development workflow? Or, if you’re a designer, what’s it like working with devs who "get" your design decisions?

Let’s talk in the comments

Your Coding Skills Aren’t Enough Anymore!

Recently at work, the frontend team flagged an endpoint tied to a UI as "not working."

The moment I got the message, I jumped straight into refactoring—rewriting queries, tweaking logic, and reshaping the endpoint based on how I ASUMED it should behave.

After hours of work, I decided to revisit the UI, this time paying closer attention to the prototype.

That’s when it hit me: the endpoint was actually correct all along. It wasn’t supposed to function the way I had assumed.

My "solution" was solving the wrong problem. This was a wake-up call. As engineers, it’s easy to rush into fixing things before fully understanding the issue.

But miscommunication—or worse, *no* communication—can cost valuable time, effort, and even money.
Key Takeaways:
1️⃣ Understand the problem first before diving into solutions.
2️⃣ Communicate early and often—keep teammates in the loop to avoid wasted effort.
3️⃣ When in doubt, ask. A quick clarification can save hours of rework.
Coding skills alone aren’t enough. Soft skills—like communication, collaboration, and problem analysis—are just as critical to delivering real value.

I used to think burnout looked like a total collapse. But it’s way sneakier than that. For me, it looked like: Doing the work, but feeling nothing after it’s done Opening my laptop and just... staring Saying “yes” out of habit, even when my tank was empty Losing interest in side projects that once lit me up And the worst part? I didn’t notice it right away. Because I was still functioning, I'm just not really feeling it anymore. The more I talk to others in tech, designers, devs, PMs, all of us, the more I realize how common this is. We’re constantly balancing: ✅ Passion with pressure ✅ Creativity with deadlines So It’s no surprise we crash sometimes. I’m still learning how to deal with it, but a few things that have helped: ✅ Taking real breaks: Not “breaks” where I still scroll design inspo or read dev blogs ✅ Letting go of the guilt when I’m not being “productive” ✅ Building things just for fun again, with no expectations Have you experienced burnout before? What helped you reset or come back from it?
