The Rivers State Police Command is yet to respond to the killing of the Vice Chairman of the Obelle Council of Chiefs, Ferdinard Dabiri, who was gunned down Saturday evening in what is believed to be a cult-related attack.

A disturbing video showing his lifeless body has since gone viral, drawing widespread condemnation and renewed calls for urgent security intervention in the Area. One of the late chief’s sons, Joseph Eze Dabiri, confirmed the killing and said his father was targeted while attending a meeting with other community leaders. Eyewitnesses say a gang led by a man known as Cairo stormed the venue. Cairo reportedly walked straight to the chief, shot him twice at close range, and fled after confirming he was dead. The incident caused panic in the community, forcing other chiefs to flee for safety.

Some residents have also reportedly left Obelle in fear of more attacks. The Chief was known for openly condemning gang violence and cultism in the community, a stance many believe made him a target.

The Rivers State Police Command says it is investigating a suspected cult-related attack that claimed the life of a university student in Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt.

Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the Rumuolumeni Division received a report that Julius Okpor, a 300-level student of Ignatius Ajuru University and indigene of Okposi in Ogba/Egbema LGA, was allegedly shot by members of a rival gang around Cecilia Road. She said police operatives responded immediately, and the victim was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead. Preliminary findings point to ongoing cult clashes as the likely motive for the attack.

The State Command states that a full-scale investigation is now underway to identify and track down those responsible. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, assured residents that efforts are being intensified to clamp down on cult groups and restore calm in the area. He urged the public to remain calm and assist police investigations by sharing credible information.

Some traders along Abuja Bypass, behind the popular Mile 3 Market, have raised concerns over the dilapidated condition of parts of the road.

The traders, who mainly sell building materials and livestock, said they have tried to patch the road with stones, gravel, and sand in the past, but the situation has since worsened. They told our correspondent that the poor road condition has severely affected their businesses, especially as the area is often submerged during rainy days. They urged the government to repair the road.

Our correspondent reports that the Abuja Bypass connects Rivers State University Roundabout, Olu Obasanjo, and Ikokwu Flyover.

The Rivers State Police Command says operatives of the Azikiwe Police Division and the Octopus Tactical Unit have foiled a planned gang war at one of the tertiary institutions in Port Harcourt.

Spokesperson for the command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said in a statement that three suspects have been arrested. One revolver pistol, one live round of ammunition, and three expended rounds were recovered from the suspects. She added that an investigation is ongoing to apprehend other fleeing gang members. Earlier, our correspondent gathered that a supremacy battle had occurred on Thursday between two rival gangs at the university. According to a source, members of one gang attempted to enter the university's main gate when they encountered their rivals along Azikiwe/Opobo Lane Street, Mile 2 Diobu, and engaged in a shootout.

The source also said the incident disrupted business activities in the area, as shop owners and passersby fled for safety. However, the situation was brought under control through the timely intervention of operatives from the Azikiwe Police Division and the Octopus Strike Force Unit.

Some opposition political parties in Rivers State are insisting that the Sole Administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, should not oversee the conduct of local government elections in the state.

Their comments follow speculation that the local government elections may be held before the state of emergency ends. Recall that the Justice Adolphus Enebeli-led Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) had initially set August 9 as the deadline for conducting the elections, before it was dissolved by the Sole Administrator. However, it remains unclear whether the newly constituted commission will follow the August timetable or establish a new one. Speaking in an interview with our correspondent, the Secretary of the Obedient Movement in Rivers State, Gogo Wellington, said the Sole Administrator is not democratically elected and, therefore, should not oversee the council elections.

Similarly, the Spokesman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state, Luckyman Igila, also stated that the Sole Administrator should not be in charge of the elections. The Chairman of the Allied People’s Movement, Dagogo Whyte, added that the current RSIEC cannot use the old timetable, as political parties are required to receive at least six months’ notice from the commission.

However, former Chairman of the Labour Party in the state, Favour Reuben, expressed a contrary view, saying there is nothing wrong with the Sole Administrator overseeing the conduct of the elections.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, says collaboration with the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has helped reduce crime and gang activities across the state.

CP Adepoju, who was represented by CSP Henry Ogbuefi, made this known during a one-day stakeholders’ engagement organised by the Sani Abacha PCRC in Port Harcourt. He assured that the police will continue to partner with the PCRC to ensure Rivers State becomes safer and more conducive for businesses to thrive. He also encouraged the public to provide credible information to assist the police in combating crime and other forms of illegality. Also speaking, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Sani Abacha Division, CSP Muktar Mahdi, appealed for increased support from the PCRC to help address some of the challenges facing the police.

Our correspondent reports that the Chairman of the Sani Abacha Area PCRC, Dr. Sam Chukwuemeka, said the meeting aimed to raise awareness and support for the Nigerian Police Force in order to enhance its operational efficiency.
