TikTok Introduces Sub-Saharan African Safety Advisory Council
TikTok continues to prioritize user safety with the introduction of its Sub-Saharan African Safety Advisory Council. This newly formed council brings together experts from various fields, including academia, content creation, research, and activism, to guide the platform in addressing the unique challenges related to online safety within the region.
The council members are:
- Prof Guy Berger, Rhodes University (South Africa) – A respected academic with a wealth of knowledge in media studies.
- Dennis Coffie, Content Creator (Ghana) – A renowned creator from Ghana, bringing valuable insight into the experiences of influencers and content creators.
- Peter Cunliffe-Jones, Visiting Research Fellow, University of Westminster (UK) – With a focus on digital media and misinformation, Peter adds a crucial perspective on fact-checking and digital literacy.
- Aisha Dabo, Co-Founder and Coordinator of AfricTivistes (Senegal) – Aisha’s background in digital activism and advocacy ensures that civil rights and freedom of expression are integral to the council’s recommendations.
- Lillian Kariuki, Founder and Executive Director, Watoto Watch Network (Kenya) – Lillian’s expertise in child protection and online safety makes her a vital voice in safeguarding young users on the platform.
- Dr Akinola Olojo, Expert on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (Nigeria) – Akinola provides deep insights into combating radicalization and extremism online, a growing concern in digital spaces.
- Prof Medhane Tadesse, Policy Academic on Peace and Security Issues (Ethiopia) – Medhane’s focus on peace, security, and conflict resolution offers a unique perspective on how social platforms can contribute to regional stability.
- Berhan Taye, Independent Researcher (Ethiopia) – Specializing in digital rights and freedom, Berhan contributes to the conversation on privacy and online security.
This diverse group of thought leaders will advise TikTok on policies and initiatives to promote a safer digital environment for users in Sub-Saharan Africa.
