The first Nigerian-born individual to serve as a mayor in the United States was Emmanuel Onunwor from the Ikwerre ethnic group. He was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1980. Onunwor was elected mayor of East Cleveland, Ohio, taking office on January 1, 1998, after winning the November 1997 election. He made history as the first African-born Black mayor in the country .
