Want to break into data analytics in 2024?

Here is my roadmap to guide you on your journey:

1. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀:

• 𝗔 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹 (Excel or Google Sheets): While they're not the most glamurus tools, they're still used by almost all companies and your business stakeholders will often ask for an Excel export.

• 𝗦𝗤𝗟: It's the most common way of how you will get and transform your data. It lets you query a wide array of databases. Don't just learn the language, but also how databases work and how to handle them efficiently. Also, get a high-level overview of other types of databases like NoSQL, Vector, and Graph DBs.

• 𝗔 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗩𝗶𝘇 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹 (Power BI or Tableau): You will use them to build robust dashboards and reports that enable your stakeholders to keep an eye on their metrics. Learn how the data modeling works in the background and how to create clear visualizations. Check the job ads of companies you would like to work for to decide which tool to learn.

• 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻: This one is a nice-to-have in the beginning, but can help you a lot with building simple pipelines and moving into predictive analytics. Focus on learning the Pandas and Numpy package for transforming datasets and one of the dataviz packages like Matplotlib or Seaborn.

2. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁-𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀:

• 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴: Practise how to identify patterns, find inconsistencies, or answering the main business questions.

• 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: Learn how to describe complex data results to non-technical stakeholder. You can practise by describing your protfolio projects to your family members and friends.

• 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Understand how to interact with different stakeholders and how to build strong relaishonships. You need to be able to translate their needs into requirements for your data projects.

3. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀-𝗢𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀:

• Apply what you’ve learned by building projects based on real-world problems.

• Choose a topic relevant to the industry you want to work in, such as sales forecasting or customer segmentation in e-commerce.

• Another option could be a personal interest, like a hobby or sports analytics.

• Try to find online data that fits your project question. The messier the data, the better, since you’ll spend a lot of time on data cleaning later on the job. Showing that you already have experience with this will give you an edge over other new starters.

2024 is your year to break into data analytics. Focus on the right mix of technical and soft skills, and build a portfolio to show your impact.

Remember, your employer hired you for a reason.

The technical skills will come with time. Focus on being kind and a good teammate, and you’ll do great.
