MATHS, ENGLISH REMAIN COMPULSORY FOR O’LEVEL STUDENTS — FG CLARIFIES

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory subjects for all candidates sitting for their O’Level examinations, despite the recent adjustments to university admission requirements.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of Education clarified that the review of admission guidelines by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) does not alter the fundamental requirement of credit passes in both subjects for secondary school certification.

According to the ministry, the clarification became necessary following public misconceptions that the subjects had been made optional after JAMB’s latest review.

“The review by JAMB only relates to flexibility in subject combinations for specific programmes in tertiary institutions. It does not in any way affect the core requirements for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), where English Language and Mathematics remain mandatory,” the statement read.

The government urged students, parents, and school administrators to disregard misleading interpretations and continue to prioritize the two subjects as essential for both academic progression and general education competence.

Education stakeholders have also commended the clarification, noting that English and Mathematics are foundational for higher learning and employment opportunities across all fields.

COUP PLOT IN NIGERIA? HERE ’S WHAT WE KNOW 👀🇳🇬

Reports have emerged alleging that a group of senior Nigerian military officers were recently arrested for plotting a coup against President Bola Tinubu. According to online media sources such as Nigerian Eye and SaharaReporters, at least 16 high-ranking officers, including a brigadier-general, were detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA). These reports claim that the officers had been secretly meeting to plan the overthrow of the Tinubu-led government, allegedly driven by grievances related to stalled promotions, career stagnation, and dissatisfaction with the current political administration. The alleged plot was reportedly timed to coincide with Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations, which some sources claim were abruptly cancelled due to fears surrounding the conspiracy.

However, the Nigerian military has firmly denied these claims. In a statement released by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), the authorities dismissed the reports as “false and misleading,” stating that the 16 officers in question are currently under investigation for professional misconduct, not for attempting to stage a coup. The DHQ emphasized that no credible evidence of a coup plot exists and described the media coverage as irresponsible and damaging to national security. The Ministry of Information also weighed in, categorizing the claims as fake news aimed at destabilizing the country.

Despite the official denials, the reports have ignited public speculation, particularly given Nigeria’s long and troubled history with military coups. The allegations raise critical questions about the current state of discipline and morale within the Nigerian Armed Forces. While grievances among military personnel may exist, no verifiable public evidence has been presented to confirm a coordinated plot to overthrow the government. The cancellation of the Independence Day parade, if indeed linked to security concerns stemming from the alleged conspiracy, would be a significant development, but this connection has not been officially acknowledged.

The unfolding situation is being closely watched both within and outside Nigeria, as any suggestion of military interference in civilian governance could have profound implications for the country’s democratic stability. Observers are waiting to see whether further details will emerge, particularly regarding the identities of the detained officers, the specific nature of the charges, and whether formal legal or disciplinary proceedings will follow. For now, the incident remains shrouded in uncertainty, with competing narratives dominating the national discourse.

RIVERS JUDICIARY COMMENCES 2025/2026 LEGAL YEAR WITH THANKSGIVING, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO JUSTICE

The Rivers State Judiciary has officially commenced the 2025/2026 legal year, beginning with a solemn thanksgiving service and a formal court session at the State High Court Complex in Port Harcourt. The events marked the resumption of full judicial activities across the state.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who attended both the church service and the special court sitting, declared the legal year officially open, reaffirming his administration’s unwavering support for an independent and efficient judiciary.

“We will continue to support the judiciary to remain independent, responsive, and effective,” the Governor said. “As the last hope of the common man, the judiciary must continue to uphold integrity, fairness, and the rule of law.”

The thanksgiving service, held at Corpus Christi Cathedral, saw judges, magistrates, lawyers, and other stakeholders dedicate the new judicial year to God, seeking divine guidance in the dispensation of justice.

Speaking during the court session, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, used the occasion to reflect on the past year’s achievements and challenges. He disclosed that the judiciary still battles infrastructural constraints and raised concerns over prison congestion.

“There are currently 493 male and 15 female inmates on death row in our correctional facilities,” Justice Amadi revealed, blaming the absence of a Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy as a major bottleneck.

The Chief Judge also expressed gratitude to the state government for ongoing support but called for increased intervention to address pressing needs, including staff welfare, infrastructure, and digital transformation of court processes.

The annual Legal Year Opening is a tradition across Nigeria’s judiciary system, often beginning with interdenominational or ecumenical services to dedicate the year’s legal proceedings to God. In Rivers State, the thanksgiving ceremony reaffirmed the moral and spiritual foundation of the justice system.

Wike Backs Tinubu Till 2031, Dismisses 2027 Presidential Ambition Rumour

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has refuted reports suggesting that some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are urging him to run for president in 2027.

Wike, who spoke in Abuja on Friday, described the rumours as baseless and politically motivated. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration until the completion of its tenure in 2031.

“I am fully committed to the success of President Tinubu’s government. My focus remains on delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT, not on any presidential ambition,” Wike stated.

The former Rivers State governor noted that his priority was to ensure the transformation of the FCT through infrastructural renewal, urban development, and improved service delivery.

Wike, who has been a key political figure since the 2023 elections, emphasized that loyalty and performance should take precedence over political speculation.

“Those peddling rumours about 2027 should find something more meaningful to do. We are focused on governance, not distractions,” he added.

The clarification comes amid widespread political speculations about possible realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

POLICE SMASH TRICYCLE ROBBERY GANG IN UYO, RECOVER 72 STOLEN PHONES AND OTHER ITEMS.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismantled a notorious robbery syndicate that used commercial tricycles to rob unsuspecting passengers in Uyo. The operation, led by Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare, resulted in the arrest of several suspects and the recovery of 72 stolen mobile phones, three tricycles, and various household items.

The breakthrough came after a complaint was lodged by a victim, Mr. Aniekan Dan, who was attacked alongside his wife on July 3, 2025. The couple boarded a tricycle from Ring Road 3 to Nwaniba, only to be robbed mid-journey at gunpoint by two men posing as passengers. The robbers made away with an iPhone 12 Pro Max, an iPhone 16, a Samsung S22, and ₦28,200 in cash before pushing the couple out of the moving tricycle near the UniUyo Permanent Site roundabout.

Fortunately, the victim was able to recall the tricycle’s registration number, MOT-0BMR, which enabled police to trace and arrest the rider, identified as Editi (34). His confession led to the arrest of four other gang members: Musa Idris Sanni (31), Utibe Asuquo Nkop (34), Dadati John (46), and Abdulrashid Sanni (28). A total of 72 assorted mobile phones and three tricycles used in their operations were recovered.

In a separate incident on October 13, 2025, police officers intercepted another tricycle with registration number 298 WZ on Nasarawa Road, Uyo. The vehicle was loaded with brand-new household electronics and appliances, including five industrial standing fans, two microwave ovens, 50 stabilisers, three electric kettles, two Startime decoders, four pressing irons, one DVD player, and a bicycle. Five suspects were apprehended in this operation: Muhammed Saifuana (32), Musa Abdulahi (27), Samaila Sauwanu (21), Mubansir Abubakar (20), and Adamu Umar (25).

Commissioner Azare, speaking at the press briefing, reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime and called on the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies. He also urged victims of recent tricycle-related robberies to visit the Uyo Area Command with valid identification and proof of ownership to reclaim their recovered items.

The suspects, according to police, will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

JAMB ANNOUNCES DEADLINES FOR 2025 ADMISSION CLOSURE

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the official deadlines for the closure of the 2025 admission exercise across all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

According to a press release issued by the Registrar’s Office on Friday, October 17, 2025, the timelines were approved during the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions held on July 18, 2025, under the chairmanship of the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa.

The statement disclosed that all public universities are expected to complete and forward their admission recommendations for suitably qualified candidates who chose them as their first choice to JAMB on or before Tuesday, 30th September 2025.

For private universities, the deadline for submission of admission recommendations is Friday, 31st October 2025, while polytechnics, colleges of education, and other tertiary institutions must conclude their admissions by Wednesday, 31st December 2025.

“These timelines were designed to ensure a structured and predictable academic calendar across all institutions and to allow every tier of tertiary education to conduct its admission process seamlessly,” the statement noted.

However, JAMB expressed concern that records available on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) indicated that some institutions had yet to submit a single admission recommendation to the Board despite clear directives and adequate time provided.

The Board urged all affected institutions to adhere strictly to the approved deadlines to avoid disruptions to the national academic calendar.

OGONI: A Precious Part of God’s Earth.

“The Ogoni had inherited a precious part of God’s earth and did everything to preserve it…”
— Ken Saro-Wiwa, Genocide in Nigeria (1992)

The Ogoni are a distinct ethnic group within the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Their territory forms the easternmost extension of the mainland fringe bordering the eastern Niger Delta, lying in an area between approximately latitude 4.05° and 4.20° north and longitudes 7.10° and 7.30° east. Covering a total of about 404 square miles, the land is part of the coastal plains terrace, a gently sloping plateau whose central part rises to around 100 feet above sea level. This fertile and river-rich region is home to an estimated population of 500,000 people.

Much anthropological, ethnographic, sociological, and linguistic work is still needed to uncover the true origins of the Ogoni people. One theory suggests they migrated into the area from across the Imo River, supported by the presence of two Ogoni villages, Warife and Utetuk, on the eastern side of the river. Another theory holds that the Ogoni came by boat from Ghana and settled in the southern part of the area. Supporters of this theory point to the name most Ogoni use for themselves "Khana" as a possible link to Ghana. Colonial administrators noted the scarcity of oral histories about Ogoni origins, and linguistic experts classify the Ogoni languages: Khana, Gokana, and Eleme, as a distinct group within the Benue-Congo branch of African languages, particularly under the New Benue-Congo family.

Generally, it is believed that the Ogoni settled in their present location well before the 15th century, establishing themselves in six traditional kingdoms: Babbe, Eleme, Gokana, Nyo-Khana, Ken-Khana, and Tai. While the detailed history behind these kingdoms is rich and fascinating, what matters most here is the legacy the Ogoni people built upon the land they inherited.

The Ogoni cherished and protected their environment. The plateau soil was rich, producing agricultural abundance. The rivers surrounding the territory teemed with fish and seafood. The people seized the opportunity to become skilled farmers and fishermen, turning their homeland into the food basket of the eastern Niger Delta.

But more importantly, the Ogoni understood from the earliest times, the necessity of preserving their land for themselves and future generations. It was a responsibility they took seriously, and one they carried out fiercely.
