🌸 What is PCOS?

Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects people with ovaries, usually during their reproductive years (15–44).
It’s called “polycystic” because many women with PCOS have small cysts (fluid-filled sacs) on their ovaries, though not everyone has these.

It affects how the ovaries work, mainly by:
• Preventing regular ovulation
• Increasing levels of androgens (male hormones like testosterone)
• Causing irregular periods and fertility issues

Common Symptoms

Not everyone has the same symptoms, but these are the most common:
1. Irregular periods or no periods at all
2. Excess hair growth (face, chest, back) – called hirsutism
3. Acne or oily skin
4. Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
5. Thinning hair or hair loss from the scalp
6. Darkening of skin in areas like the neck or groin
7. Mood changes – depression, anxiety
8. Infertility – trouble getting pregnant due to lack of ovulation

⚙️ Causes of PCOS

The exact cause isn’t known, but it’s linked to:
• Hormonal imbalance, especially high androgens
• Insulin resistance – body doesn’t use insulin properly, raising blood sugar and increasing androgen production
• Genetics – tends to run in families
• Chronic inflammation – can stimulate ovaries to produce more androgens

🩺 How is PCOS Diagnosed?

Doctors typically use the Rotterdam Criteria – you need 2 of these 3:
1. Irregular or absent ovulation (irregular periods)
2. High levels of androgens (via symptoms or blood tests)
3. Polycystic ovaries seen on ultrasound

Other tests might include:
• Blood tests (hormones, insulin, glucose, cholesterol)
• Pelvic ultrasound

💊 Treatment Options

There’s no “cure” for PCOS, but it can be managed with lifestyle and medications.

1. Lifestyle changes (first-line treatment)

• Weight loss (even 5–10% helps)
• Balanced diet (low sugar, low carb, high fiber)
• Regular exercise
• Stress management

2. Medications

• Hormonal birth control – to regulate periods, reduce hair/acne
• Metformin – helps insulin resistance
• Clomiphene or Letrozole – helps with ovulation if trying to conceive
• Anti-androgens – to reduce excess hair or acne (e.g., spironolactone)

🥦 Diet Tips for PCOS

• High-fiber foods (vegetables, whole grains)
• Lean protein (chicken, fish, legumes)
• Healthy fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil)
• Limit sugar and processed carbs
• Avoid trans fats and overly processed foods

🤰 PCOS and Fertility

PCOS is one of the most common causes of infertility because it affects ovulation.
Good news: Many women with PCOS do get pregnant with the right treatment – lifestyle changes, medications, or assisted reproductive techniques.

❤️ Living with PCOS

It’s a lifelong condition, but it can be managed.
Early diagnosis and lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of long-term complications like:
• Type 2 diabetes
• Heart disease
• Endometrial cancer
• Sleep apnea

🌟 Final Thoughts

PCOS is common (1 in 10 women globally), but not hopeless. With the right support, treatment, and self-care, you can lead a healthy, fulfilling life.
