*Topic:*
*True Wealth*
*Text:* Psalms 119:33-40
119:33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. 119:34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. 119:35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight. 119:36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. 119:37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. 119:38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. 119:39 Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good. 119:40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.
*Memory Verse:*
Psalms 119:35
Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
*Brief Commentary*
Many pursue wealth today of the material kind. We all know how necessary money is, however, Jesus identifies a particular temptation in life: the danger of loving money more than God. ‘No one can serve two masters...You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money’ (Matthew 6:24, see also 1 John 2:15). The psalmist here seems to realize this potential risk and he cries out, ‘Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word' (v.36-37). How many of us pray that kind of prayer? The psalmist identifies something of greater wealth and that brings greater joy than money—it is walking faithfully with God. ‘Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness Is found' (v.35). May we too, like the psalmist find the greatest route to happiness—keeping in step with his Spirit, for worldly riches are not true wealth.
*Declaration:*
*We affirm that God not money is our source and Heaven not wealth is our pursuit; but all good things will follow after us daily.*
*Prayer:*
Father, God, give us an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! Turn our eyes from worthless things.
