Supreme Court Directs Lawyers to Stop Using "Barrister" as a Title Prefix.

Abuja, Nigeria – July 31, 2026

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has issued a directive prohibiting the use of the title "Barrister" as a prefix to the names of legal practitioners, court registrars, litigation staff, and lawyers in all official communications and engagements.

According to a memorandum dated July 13, 2026, and signed by the Chief Registrar, Kabir E. Akanbi, Esq., the directive was issued on the instruction of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The memo, addressed to litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars, and lawyers, states that the use of "Barrister" as a title before names is considered inappropriate and "inconsistent with the standards of professionalism" expected within the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The memorandum further directs all affected officers to immediately discontinue the use of the title in "official correspondence, records, documents, identity materials, and other official engagements".

It also mandates Heads of Departments and Unit Heads to ensure strict compliance with the directive by all officers under their supervision.

The directive has sparked discussions within Nigeria's legal community, where the title "Barrister" has long been widely used as a professional prefix by many lawyers.

While the memorandum specifically addresses official usage within the Supreme Court's sphere of administration, it underscores the judiciary's emphasis on maintaining uniform professional standards.

Elephants is seen repeatedly across the Andoni Forest particularly within the Okoroboile, Ikuru, Asuk-Oyet, Ilomtobi, Ekede, Okoifet and surrounding communities is compelling evidence that the forest remains home to a rich diversity of wildlife.

Therefore, Conserving the Andoni Forest would not only protect its unique biodiversity but also create significant opportunities for ecotourism, generate sustainable revenue, stimulate the local economy, create employment, and attract foreign investment to Andoni.
