THE DAY MY NO-CREDIT POLICY SAVED ME FROM ANOTHER HEADACHE 😂
I have this regular customer who comes to the shop at least once a week to buy drugs for her birds.
She never asks for credit, probably because she knows our company policy: we don't do credit sales, no matter how small the amount is.
But one particular day, she ran short of cash.Because she was an old and trusted customer, I decided to make an exception and gave her the drugs, against company policy.
Fast-forward three weeks later, this woman came around again to buy drugs for her birds. After calculating her current purchase, I reminded her about her old debt so I could add it to the current bill.
Guess what?
This woman denied owing me! 😳
Na once my eye first blur. 😂
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
She went on and on about how she doesn't like owing people, how she cuts her coat according to her cloth, and all the things people say when they are trying very hard to convince you—and perhaps themselves—that they don't owe you anything. 😂
I kept my cool, collected payment for her current purchase and allowed her to leave.
For the next two months, she continued coming to buy from me, and I never mentioned the old debt again.
Then came the beautiful day of reckoning. 😂
She came around once again and, as usual, ran short of cash. This time, she pleaded with me to give her the drugs and allow her to pay later.
Me? NO WAY!
I calmly told her that I don't do credit sales because it is against company policy.
She pleaded. I refused.
Then I told her: "I stopped giving people credit because some people deny their debts later and make me look like a fool—or even worse, like a fraud who is trying to collect money they don't deserve."
Guess what happened next?
This woman's voice suddenly became very soft. 😂
She looked at me and said, “Is it because of what happened the other day?”
Me: 👀
She continued, “Oya, I am very sorry. Please forgive me. I didn't have enough money that day and I would have paid you. I just had to lie to escape. Please, I am sorry.”
At least, finally, the truth came out. 🙌🏽😂
I told her, “Thank you for opening up. I had already forgiven you, but I have gone back strictly to my no-credit-sales policy. I am sorry, I can't change it.”
And that was it.
She left.
Lesson of the story?
Sometimes, a person doesn't need to be a bad person to teach you a very important lesson about boundaries.
I learnt mine that day: Never break a system that was created to protect you simply because you trust someone.
Policies may look harsh until the day someone gives you a reason to understand why they exist.
These days, if you don't have the money, no vex. 😂
Come back when you do. My company policy and I are now best friends. 🤝🏽😂
And please, let us all learn to say the truth even when it is uncomfortable. A temporary lie may help you escape an awkward situation today, but the truth has a way of coming back to collect its own interest. 😅
