JUST IN: World Teachers’ Day: Labour Party calls for state of emergency in teaching sector

The Labour Party, LP, has called on the Nigerian government to take a critical look at the pitiable condition of teachers in the country and declare a national state of emergency in the teaching sector.

The party said no nation could genuinely grow where those entrusted with moulding the future generations of its citizens were themselves ill-equipped, poorly motivated and inadequately rewarded to perform their duties.

LP described teachers as the very bastion of the nation’s knowledge and learning while wishing them a happy World Teachers’ Day.

“Given the pivotal role teachers play in moulding our children and youths into the future leaders of tomorrow, [we] note with regret the current position of Nigerian teachers in society,” a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, said.

“As Nigerian teachers continue to agitate for better learning conditions for our children and improved working conditions for themselves, the Labour Party wishes to assure them that it stands firmly by them.

“[We] also call on those in authority to take a critical look at the pitiable condition of Nigerian teachers and declare a National State of Emergency in the teaching sector,” it said.

“The nation must prioritise the training and retraining of Nigerian teachers, while also paying significant attention to the learning conditions of our children and the welfare and working conditions of teachers.

“When it is said that a teacher’s reward is in heaven, it does not suggest that teachers should be starved to death. It simply means that there is a special place reserved for them in the afterlife because of their enormous contributions to the cause of humanity.”

The Labour Party therefore celebrated Nigerian teachers on this special occasion and reaffirmed its commitment to a Nigeria where teachers are respected, adequately rewarded and provided with the necessary tools and conditions to effectively shape the future of the nation.

JUST IN: Kebbi State Gov, orders armoured vehicles to boost security operations

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has disclosed that his administration has ordered new security vehicles, including armoured vehicles, as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and protect communities affected by recent banditry attacks.

The governor made this known on Monday during sympathy visits to Jandutsi in Jega Local Government Area and Andarai in Maiyama Local Government Area, where he met victims of recent attacks and displaced residents.

This is contained in a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, on Monday.

Speaking during the visits, Governor Idris assured residents that his administration remained committed to protecting lives and property and would deploy the necessary resources to prevent further attacks.

He disclosed that additional security personnel had also been requested and deployed to vulnerable areas across the state.

According to him, “additional security personnel had also been requested and deployed to vulnerable areas, with the government working to ensure that the personnel are properly positioned in communities facing security challenges.”

The governor said the government’s aim was to ensure that residents could live and carry out their legitimate activities without fear.

Governor Idris said “the objective was to create an environment where residents could go about their legitimate activities without fear and sleep peacefully in their homes, stressing that the government would not relent in its efforts to protect citizens.”

He also called for stronger cooperation among neighbouring states, particularly in border communities where criminals could exploit jurisdictional boundaries to carry out attacks.

The governor urged his counterparts in the region and other stakeholders to improve inter-state cooperation and intelligence sharing as part of efforts to tackle insecurity.

Idris also directed the provision of additional relief assistance to communities affected by the attacks, assuring victims and displaced residents that the state government would continue to respond to their immediate humanitarian needs.

At Jandutsi, the District Head, Ibrahim Abubakar, and other community leaders thanked the governor for the relief assistance provided to affected residents and for visiting the community.

They appealed for permanent security personnel and additional support for local vigilantes to improve security in the area.

In Andarai, the District Head, Muhammad Aliyu, and the Chairman of Maiyama LGA, Adamu Aliyu Liba, also commended the governor for providing relief materials and financial assistance to victims and displaced persons.

They called for increased security presence, temporary shelters for displaced residents and urgent intervention to address the community’s water shortage.

JUST IN: Zamfara Is Able To Make About ₦5.5bn A Month, But In 2023 Monthly IGR Was ₦90m & 80% Was PAYE—Lawal

Dauda Lawal, the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, has said the monthly internally generated revenue of the state rose from ₦90 million in 2023 to about ₦5.5 billion after sweeping reforms introduced by his administration in revenue collection.

According to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of Arise News on Monday, October 5, 2026, while speaking during a televised interview, the governor explained how the state funded its daily operations when he assumed office.

He said that at the time his administration took over office, the state collected very little revenue monthly, and most of it came from salary tax deductions, leaving the state government with very limited room to function properly.

During the interview, he stated, “the monthly IGR then, in 2023, was ₦90 million, and 80% of that ₦90 million was PAYE, so you can imagine how you function under that kind of circumstances.”

He continued, “so we had to take some drastic measures to review the whole process of even revenue collection, and we brought in a consultant. I mean, this is my field, because I was an ex-banker, or, yeah, let me put it that way. And I'm happy to say, based on the changes we put in place, Zamfara is able to make about ₦5.5 billion a month.”

Lawal said his administration took some drastic measures to review the whole process of revenue collection in the state and also brought in a consultant, noting that banking is his own field because he is a former banker.

In his concluding remarks, Lawal said the changes his administration put in place now allow Zamfara State to make about ₦5.5 billion monthly in internally generated revenue, compared with the ₦90 million recorded in 2023 before the reforms

JUST IN: Teachers’ Day: I apologise to Nigerian teachers for Tinubu’s failed leadership – Atiku

Former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has lamented the worsening cost of living, which is making it harder for Nigerian teachers to support their families and carry out their vital work.

In a statement on Monday by his spokesperson, Atiku hailed Nigerian teachers for their sacrifices.

“Of course, I appreciate Nigerian teachers. I am a product of their work and the education I received in their classrooms. I still remember the names and faces of my early teachers in Jada, who saw potential in a young orphan when few others did. They taught me arithmetic and grammar, but they also gave me a future.”

JUST IN: Police invite Kano politician seen wielding suspected pump-action gün

The Kano State Police Command has invited Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, who was seen in a viral clip wielding a sophisticated fi***rm suspected to be a pump-action gun.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said that, in line with its sustained intelligence-led surveillance, robust community engagement and proactive security presence across the state, the police, while on routine cyber patrol, came across a video clip circulating on social media platforms in which Warkal was seen openly displaying a fi***rm suspected to be a pump-action r***e during what appeared to be a political gathering.

He said the alleged unlawful display of a fi***rm, if established, constituted a clear violation of the provisions of the Fi****ms Act and was capable of inciting fear, intimidating members of the public and breaching public peace and security.

Kiyawa noted that, on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, Warkal was invited to the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano.

“He is currently at the Command’s State Intelligence Department (SID) and investigation is in progress,” he confirmed.

The Command’s spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police strongly warned that the Command would not tolerate any act of lawlessness, thuggery or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, irrespective of the status of the person involved.

He further advised members of the public, particularly political gladiators, their supporters and other stakeholders, to conduct themselves peacefully and abide strictly by the provisions of the Electoral Act, the Fi****ms Act and other extant laws of the land.

“All political activities must be conducted in a manner that promotes peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.”

“The Kano State Police Command reiterates its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that the State remains peaceful before, during and after the political season,” he said.

JUST IN: 2027: HURIWA Asks INEC To Clarify Rules On Tompolo’s Campaign Donations

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify the regulatory framework governing reported donations of more than 100 campaign vehicles and other logistics by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

HURIWA, a pro-democracy and civil rights advocacy group, said the reported donations should be examined from the perspective of campaign-finance rules, particularly the requirements for declaring and accounting for in-kind contributions to political campaigns.

The organisation said media reports indicated that Tompolo had donated 50 new vehicles to Kano State, 44 to Borno State, 34 to Katsina State and 25 to Taraba State for house-to-house campaign activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
