: RWUS – The Women Who Refused to Be Silent

There comes a time in the life of every people

when history no longer asks,

“Who was watching?”

It asks,

“Who stood when it mattered?”

When that question is asked of Rivers State,

the answer will not come from monuments or headlines.

It will come from the footsteps of women.

The women of Rivers Women Unite for SIM (RWUS).

They did not gather because it was convenient.

They gathered because they loved Rivers State.

Because they believed peace was worth praying for.

Because they believed truth was worth defending.

Because they believed that when women stand together, a people can find hope again.

From the creeks to the uplands…

From the markets to the classrooms…

From offices, churches, homes and communities…

They came.

Market women with calloused hands.

Professionals with busy schedules.

Artisans.

Civil servants.

Students.

Young women with dreams.

Mothers with quiet strength.

Grandmothers with wisdom.

From all twenty-three Local Government Areas, they came—not as strangers, but as sisters.

Different languages.

Different traditions.

Different stories.

Yet one heartbeat.

One family.

One purpose.

They became known not for what they said,

but for what they did.

They visited communities.

They reached out to market women.

They stood beside the elderly.

They encouraged widows.

They embraced the vulnerable.

They stretched out helping hands wherever hope seemed to be fading.

Because they understood that service is not measured by applause,

but by the tears you wipe away.

Then came a day that would become part of Rivers history.

Women Converge.

Thousands upon thousands of women standing shoulder to shoulder.

Songs rising into the sky.

Supporters proudly remember it as the largest gathering of women in Nigeria.

It was more than a programme.

It was proof that when women decide to stand together,

no force can ignore their presence.

Yet perhaps the most beautiful part of RWUS is not seen by cameras.

It is found every last Thursday of the month.

On that day,

the women gather in thanksgiving.

Not because life has been perfect,

but because God has remained faithful.

They sing.

They dance.

They clap.

Some close their eyes as tears quietly roll down their cheeks.

Some lift trembling hands toward heaven.

Together, they thank God for His mercy.

They pray for Rivers State.

They pray for peace in every community.

They pray for every leader.

They pray for Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, asking God to strengthen him, protect him, grant him wisdom and surround him with favour.

For they believe that before anything changes on earth,

prayers first rise to heaven.

Those gatherings are always a sight to behold.

The colourful George wrappers.

The beautifully tailored blouses.

The proud smiles.

The graceful dances.

Every woman dressed not only in fabric,

but in dignity.

In culture.

In pride.

Then came the season that tested every heart.

The season when Rivers State found itself in one of its most difficult political moments.

Many became silent.

Many looked away.

Many chose the safety of saying nothing.

RWUS did not.

When emergency rule came upon Rivers State, the women believed the people deserved to have their voices heard.

So they walked.

Not with anger.

Not with violence.

But with their hands tied.

They flooded the streets of Port Harcourt in a peaceful procession.

Dressed in red.

Bound wrists.

Covered mouths.

Steady footsteps.

Heavy hearts.

The ropes around their hands and white cloths tied across their mouths became a message to the world—

that they believed the voices of Rivers people had been gagged.

“You may tie our hands. You may cover our mouths. But you cannot silence our hearts.”

It was one of the most emotional demonstrations the state had witnessed.

No loud speeches.

No destruction.

Only women carrying the pain of a people in silence.

And sometimes,

silence speaks louder than shouting.

Then another moment came.

When the wife of the Sole Administrator stepped into the public space in a manner supporters interpreted as presenting herself as the First Lady of Rivers State, RWUS stood firm and rejected it outright.

Not out of hatred.

Not out of bitterness.

But because the women believed that constitutional order should be respected.

They stood where they believed truth was standing,

even when standing there was uncomfortable.

That has always been the spirit of RWUS.

Not to follow the easiest road,

but to remain faithful to what they believe is right.

Many misunderstood them.

Some criticised them.

Others mocked them.

Yet they kept walking.

Because love for Rivers State demanded courage.

And courage always comes with a price.

Today, RWUS is no longer just the name of a movement.

It has become a home.

A sisterhood.

A family.

A place where women lift one another instead of pulling each other down.

A place where colourful wrappers dance in thanksgiving.

A place where prayers never cease.

A place where service comes before recognition.

A place where Rivers State is loved deeply.

Years from now,

people may forget the dates.

They may forget the venues.

They may forget the banners.

But they will remember the women.

The women who prayed every last Thursday of the month.

The women who gathered in their beautiful wrappers with songs of thanksgiving on their lips.

The women who filled the streets with bound hands rather than clenched fists.

The women who spoke when others were afraid.

The women who refused to abandon what they believed.

The women who loved Rivers State enough to stand with her BEYOND THE STORM.

That is the legacy of Rivers Women Unite for SIM.

Rivers Women Unite for Sim Celebrates the Premiere of Remi x Nneoma: A Timeless Story of Sisterhood, Healing, and Hope

Some stories entertain. Others inspire reflection long after the credits roll. Remi x Nneoma is undoubtedly one of those rare films.

Officially premiered yesterday at Box Office Cinema, Garden City Mall, Rumuomasi, Port Harcourt, this emotionally rich Nollywood drama presents a contemporary Nigerian retelling of the biblical story of Ruth and Naomi, beautifully set within the Ikwerre community of Rivers State.

The film follows Nneoma and her Yoruba daughter-in-law, Remi, whose lives become inseparably bound through shared loss. As they navigate the harsh realities of widowhood, societal expectations, grief, and cultural traditions, they choose loyalty over separation, discovering healing, resilience, hope, and ultimately, the possibility of new beginnings.

One of the most profound moments in the film comes after the successful one-year memorial service for Remi's late husband. While she is commended for organizing such a remarkable event, Remi humbly acknowledges that she could not have achieved it alone. She attributes its success to the unwavering support of a community of women who stood with her throughout her journey.

That powerful scene is a reminder of an enduring truth: no woman is meant to walk life's most difficult paths alone.

It is a value that resonates deeply with Rivers Women Unite for Sim (RWUS). Beyond being an organization, RWUS is a community of women committed to standing with one another through seasons of joy, grief, celebration, and adversity. We believe that true sisterhood is demonstrated not only in moments of triumph but also in times of pain, loss, and uncertainty. Our commitment is to provide encouragement, practical support, prayers, and genuine companionship, ensuring that no member journeys alone.

As members of RWUS, we were honoured to be present at the official launch of this remarkable production. The themes of compassion, loyalty, resilience, and communal support portrayed in Remi x Nneoma mirror the very ideals our organization seeks to promote among women across Rivers State and beyond.

We congratulate the producers, cast, crew, and everyone whose creativity and dedication brought this exceptional story to life. Remi x Nneoma is more than a film; it is a heartfelt celebration of family, faith, culture, healing, and the extraordinary strength that emerges when women choose to stand together.

We encourage everyone to watch this beautiful masterpiece in cinemas and support a story that reminds us that even after profound loss, love, hope, and community can help write a new chapter.

Rivers Women Embrace Skills Acquisition for Economic Growth

Women under the aegis of Rivers Women Unite for SIM have intensified efforts to promote economic self-reliance through skills acquisition programmes aimed at improving the livelihoods of women across Rivers State.

The women made this known during their monthly prayer meeting held on Thursday at the Ecumenical Centre in Port Harcourt, where they stressed the need for women to develop practical skills to cope with the nation's changing economic realities.

Speaking on the theme, “Praise, Purpose and Productivity: Giving Thanks, Gaining Skills, Building Futures,” participants said the initiative was designed to encourage women to pursue economic independence and strengthen their capacity to support their families amid prevailing economic challenges.

They noted that empowering women economically contributes significantly to societal development, describing women as natural multipliers of opportunities who can transform modest beginnings into meaningful achievements.

The group urged participants to remain committed and intentional in acquiring the skills offered through the programme, emphasising that dedication and perseverance would help them build sustainable businesses and secure better futures.

The prayer session concluded with a practical demonstration on soap, bleach and disinfectant production, as part of the vocational skills earmarked for comprehensive training during the group's June and July gathering. There are also other skills earmarked by the group for subsequent training exercise.

The women expressed their sustained commitment to Gov. Fubara as a leader committed to the welfare and empowerment of women in the State.
