Casket Arrives at Late Olu Jacobs’ Funeral

The funeral mass for late Nollywood veteran Olu Jacobs is underway today, Friday, October 2, 2026, at his Present House, Freedom Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, with family members, colleagues, and dignitaries gathered to honour the iconic actor.

Jacobs’ casket, adorned with flowers, was placed in front of the church as the service began.

Live coverage showed his widow, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their sons, Olusoji and Olugbenga Jacobs, at the ceremony, dressed in blue.

Among those present were Lagos State First Lady Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat and his wife, Chief Mrs Oluremi Hamzat; former Ogun State Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun; and former Ekiti State First Lady Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi.

The funeral service follows a Night of Tributes held on Wednesday, September 30, at Glover Memorial Hall on Lagos Island.

I Fought to Save Passengers, Says Flydubai Pilot

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot of a Flydubai passenger flight, has described how he struggled to regain control of the cockpit after being attacked by his co-pilot, determined not to let the passengers die.

Machchhar said he was lying injured on the cockpit floor when he realised the aircraft was plunging and decided to make one final effort. “I was lying on the floor injured but I told myself to go for one last push to open the door from inside,” he recounted during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Others came in and also played a role in controlling the situation. I was of course fighting for my own life, but at the same time I knew I was not going to let others die.”

Flydubai flight FZ1073, en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv early on Wednesday, dropped more than 17,000 feet (about 5,200 metres) roughly two and a half hours into the journey. The aircraft first transmitted an emergency signal before switching to the international hijacking code 7500.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later stated that one pilot had stabbed the other and appeared to be trying to crash the plane. Passengers overpowered the attacker. Two reserve pilots who were travelling as passengers then took control and safely landed the aircraft at Tabuk Airport in north-western Saudi Arabia at 06:58 local time.

Melaye knocks Tinubu for Omitting Most Critical Issues in Independence Day speech

Former senator Dino Melaye has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day broadcast, accusing him of deliberately sidestepping Nigeria’s most pressing challenge, insecurity.

In a statement on Thursday, Melaye said it was “a pity and a shame” that Tinubu mentioned insecurity only once in his October 1 address, despite the daily reality of kidnappings, killings, and widespread fear across the country.

“Over 1,000 Nigerians are currently being held captive in forests by terrorists. Farmers cannot access their lands, and people are being killed every day. Yet the President chose to gloss over this,” Melaye declared.

Tinubu’s speech, themed “From Reform to Prosperity”, focused largely on economic reforms, claiming Nigeria had endured the toughest phase and was now entering an era of growth. He highlighted declining inflation, improved oil-sector performance, and promised lower living costs, more jobs, and expanded production.

His criticism came just hours after bandits attacked residents in Kaduna State on Independence Day, killing one person and abducting several others, an incident Melaye said underscores the urgency of the issue Tinubu failed to address.

Israel to Present Awards to Flydubai Passengers Who Foiled Cockpit Attack

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has announced that four passengers who helped overpower a violent co-pilot on a Flydubai flight will receive the nation’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.

The incident occurred when the aircraft, bound for Tel Aviv, was diverted to Saudi Arabia after both pilots were found wounded.

Officials said the co-pilot attempted to crash the plane, but passengers intervened after hearing screams about a stabbing.

“You put yourselves at risk to save others and prevented a terrible disaster. Today, the whole world saw the beautiful and courageous face of Israeli society,” Herzog said in a statement, praising the bravery of those involved.

Among the honorees is Yaniv Hayoun, a plumber who broke into the cockpit and pinned down the attacker.

2027: If APC wins, we are retired from politics- Amaechi tells ADC leaders

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, has vowed to retire from partisan politics if President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress, APC, wins the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi urged ADC leaders to go all out in their various states and ensure that Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during the ADC National Women League Conference in Abuja on Wednesday, he warned that Tinubu’s victory would lead to the retirement of most ADC leaders.

He said: “If you are not from FCT, go home and campaign. Me, I am going on Wednesday. I will not wear a suit, I will dress like a young man.

"Let me tell you what will happen, we the crop of leaders you see here, if APC wins the 2027 elections, we are retired from politics. So if you don’t want us to retire from politics, we must go home.

“If you bring two thousand votes per ward, just bring two thousand votes and we have won the election.”

Nigeria @ 66: 2027 Polls Will Test Nigeria’s Democratic Maturity - Jonathan

I’ll resign if Nigeria doesn’t begin to change in one year of ADC government - Amaechi

Rotimi Amaechi, vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says he will resign from office if Nigeria does not begin to experience change within one year of an ADC administration.

Speaking on Wednesday on AIT, Amaechi said he believes an ADC government would prioritise major sectors if elected in 2027.

“If Nigeria does not begin to change, one year after we have come to office, come to me, I will resign,” the vice-presidential candidate said.

“One year after? Yes, if Nigeria does not begin to change. I didn’t say Nigeria must change or that everything must change. But even if you feel the change, you have a breath of fresh air.”

Amaechi added that security, education and the economy must be addressed for Nigeria to make progress.
