Today marks one month since one of the most painful experiences of my life. I never thought I would be a victim of fraud, but on May 29, it happened to me. This isn’t a post for pity, it’s a story of pain, lesson, and God’s grace through it all.
One month ago today, my life changed in a way I never imagined.
On the 29th of May, I became a victim of a carefully planned scam.
It all started when I reconnected with someone I knew on Facebook. We chatted often, vibed as young graduates, and talked about life in Nigeria. Unknown to me, his Facebook account had been hacked, and the person I was chatting with wasn’t actually him.
After a few weeks, “he” sent me a phone number, telling me it belonged to his mother. He asked me to call her, pray with her, and wish her a happy birthday. I did exactly that. The woman sounded elderly, spoke in pidgin, and our conversation felt genuine.
A few days later, she called me again. She claimed she ran an orphanage in Jos and desperately needed financial assistance. She told me bandits had attacked the orphanage and the children were in danger.
I explained that I didn’t have money, but she pleaded with me to borrow if I could. Her story touched my heart deeply. Without thinking twice, I reached out to people, borrowed a huge amount of money, and sent it to the account she provided.
Not long after, she called again, claiming one of the children had been shot and urgently needed more money. Out of compassion, I borrowed even more and sent it.
Immediately after making the second transfer, reality hit me.
I asked myself, “Who is this woman? I don’t even know her.”
My heart sank.
I cried. I blamed myself. I felt broken, ashamed, and overwhelmed. In just a short moment, I had become a victim of people who deliberately preyed on kindness.
Today makes it exactly one month.
The journey hasn’t been easy, but it has taught me priceless lessons. I’ve learned that not everyone who appears genuine truly is. I’ve also learned to be wiser and not allow my emotions to cloud my judgment, no matter how touching a story may sound.
Above all, I’m grateful to God for giving me the strength to keep going when I felt like giving up.
And to the incredible people with kind hearts who stood by me and helped me clear the debts I incurred because of this incident, you know yourselves. Thank you. Your generosity reminded me that even though wicked people exist, there are still good people in this world.
If there’s one thing I hope you take from my story, it’s this: Be compassionate, but also be careful. Verify before you trust. Don’t let anyone pressure you into making financial decisions based solely on emotions.
May God continue to protect us all from evil and from those who prey on innocent hearts. ❤️
