In an incredible medical breakthrough, doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center pulled off something no one thought possible: they removed a spinal tumor through a young woman’s eye socket. Karla Flores, just 19 when diagnosed, faced a terrifying reality—a rare chordoma tumor was wrapped around her cervical spine and spinal cord. Regular surgery was too dangerous, with risks that could’ve changed her life forever. So, Dr. Mohamed Labib and his team took a bold leap, using a never-before-tried “transorbital” approach, navigating the delicate space behind her eye to reach the tumor.

This technique, sometimes used for brain surgeries, was uncharted territory for the spine. With advanced imaging, pinpoint precision, and skills they’d perfected through years of research on cadavers, the team pulled it off—removing the entire tumor without harming Karla’s neurological functions. No big scars, no disfigurement, just a groundbreaking path through a tiny, unexpected entryway.

Now 20, Karla is cancer-free and rebuilding her life after follow-up radiation and spinal fusion. Her journey is more than just beating cancer—it’s a testament to her courage, the team’s relentless innovation, and the magic that happens when doctors dare to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
