PLATEAU CIVIL SERVANTS URGED TO EMBRACE GREENHOUSE FARMING

By Rotmwa Kassam Paulina

In a move to reposition agriculture as a sustainable means of livelihood and food security, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Philemon Audu Daffi Esq. has called on civil servants to take greenhouse farming seriously, describing it as not only a heritage practice but a legitimate and rewarding venture.

The Commissioner made this statement during a farm visit to the 2025 Farmers’ Field Day, an event organized by the Plateau Agricultural Development Programme (PADP) in collaboration with Dizengoff Nigeria, a Balton CP Company.

Speaking at the event, the commissioner highlighted the state governor’s strategic focus on agriculture, stating that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has taken proactive steps in promoting farming because it is one of his key areas of interest and giving that farming is part of the state's heritage.

According to him, as a lawyer, the only business he is permitted to engage in without conflict is farming and added that farming plays a crucial role in tackling hunger, food insecurity and rising living costs.

Daffi said that the initiative was timely and commendable, and encouraged everyone, including civil servants, to get involved in farming and to take it seriously.

The Program Manager of PADP, Mr. Ishaku Jilansem emphasized the essence of the event, which is introducing greenhouse farming as a visible and viable agribusiness model.

He explained that the program brings greenhouse technology to the forefront, showing the public its potential and noted with delight that Ministry of Justice has been exemplary in its involvement.

Speaking further, Ishaku expressed that farming remains one of the few ventures a civil servant can undertake without raising red flags from regulatory agencies like the EFCC and that if more ministries utilize available land around the Secretariat for such innovation, we could achieve self-sufficiency even within the urban spaces.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Urban and Physical Development, Yop Rwang, Esq advocated increased female participation in farming, stating that women must be included in both access to farmland and agricultural programs.

Dizengoff Regional Sales Manager, Camy K. Iroba described the greenhouse farming model on display as a modernized upgrade suited for urban farmers, offering higher yields, controlled growing environments, and shorter crop cycles.

He pointed out that it is a scalable and efficient model allowing busy professionals like civil servants to grow food close to home without the logistical demands of traditional farming.

Additionally, greenhouse farming presents an exciting frontier for civil servants seeking alternative income sources while contributing meaningfully to national food production, and can lead the charge in turning Nigeria into an agriculturally self-reliant nation.

UPHOLDING DUE PROCESS IN JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS IN PLATEAU STATE...CAGING THE SPIRIT OF UNGUARDED UTTERANCES AMONGST FUND...

UPHOLDING DUE PROCESS IN JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS IN PLATEAU STATE.
..CAGING THE SPIRIT OF UNGUARDED UTTERANCES AMONGST FUNDAMENTALISTS IN PLATEAU STATE:THE VIRAL VIDEO OF AN ISLAMIC IMAM AGAINST GOVERNOR MUTFWANG AND THE PLATEAU JUDICIARY.

By Nanyah Daman and Friday Derwan,Jos.

The appointments of the Plateau State High Court Judges is strictly a constitutional affair with laid down procedures that shall not be compromised.

When the Executive Governor of Plateau State,His Excellency Barr Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang nominated candidates for such vacancies, the rest of the process is strictly rested on the shoulders of the Judicial Service Commission(JSC) to effectively handle.

This is to be in line with mandates of the JSC which amongst others is to offer advice on appointments of the judges at both the higher and lower bench.

In the process of appointing Judges, the Judicial Service Commission ensures that only qualified and credible candidates are appointed through laid down procedures.

This process requires that candidates are thoroughly screened to include aptitude test so as to ensure that only the best emerged.

Earlier this year that process was seen in action in Plateau State when the National Judicial Council(NJC) gave the state slots for High Court Judges.

It is on record that so many people applied for it and at the end of exercise six people emerged top and their names submitted to the National Judicial Council for consideration.

While the state awaited the response from the NJC to allow the State Governor,Barr Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang effect the appointments, certain developments began to manifest which eventually led to halting the much anticipated approval of the appointments by the NJC for the state.

Other states in the country have already received such blessings from the Apex body of the nation’s judiciary.

While the state anxiously waited upon the verdict of the NJC on its six nominees, a video emerged from an Islamic cleric in Jos casting aspersions on the State Governor,Barr Caleb Mutfwang.

In the video that has gone viral, the cleric was heard accusing Governor Mutfwang of sidelining Muslims in the state in the appointment of judges.
The cleric who was addressing his adherence also made very saddening and unverified claims stating that in all, there's no representation of Muslims in the number of Judges in the Plateau State High Court, which is far from the truth.

While such claims could have been allowed to pass unperturbed, it is imperative to shed some light on all the issues raised by the cleric.

It is imperative to note that in the appointments of State High Court Judges or any cadre of Judges, the sentiment of religion has no place and only suitable persons who meet the necessary criteria emerge and are so appointed.

Contrary to the Cleric's allegations that the state has never had Muslims as High Court Judges due to perceived segregation, records has shown that after the creation of Nasarawa State out of the old Plateau, the state has had four high court judges who are Muslims.

One of such got retired just few years back and now deceased, while three others are still in active service, out of which another has been elevated to the Court of Appeal.

Research has also shown that in the northern states of the country the opportunities of becoming a judge has never been availed to adherents of other religions other than the one that controls majority of the populace in those states.

That is not so in Plateau State which has never used religion as a yard stick for any consideration instead, the state has been magnanimous to all when it comes to making critical decisions as the appointment of judges and other political appointees.

It's very clear that the action of the Cleric is coming on heels of some Muslim candidates who applied for the job but failed to sail through because their performance during the screening exercise failed far below acceptable standards.

This is obvious because the Cleric displayed high level of ignorance on what it entails to become a Judge of the High Court and was fed with misinformation.

His historical analysis of what he viewed as marginalisation of Muslims in the state Judiciary has also turned out to be fiction of his mere imagination.

The cleric has failed to show course why right thinking members of the society should believe in such vituperations that lack backing powers of records.

Whipping religious sentiments on issues in the country has become a stock in trade of some Nigerians who believed that such can always give them what they want on a platter of gold even when they do not deserve it.

No, it’s not always so because the hands of God Almighty is stronger than any other.God favours whom he wants to favour without human input.

The judiciary is that Arm of Government where those who manned the system are people with impeccable resource and sound knowledge of the law devoid of the all comers syndrome.

Labeling Governor Mutfwang as biased in the nominations of the six judges as postulated by the cleric was most unfair to him in all seriousness.

Governor Mutfwang in all honesty has since assumption of office tried his best to remodel the state in the fashion where everyone will be proud to behold.

The National Judicial Council had availed all those who participated in that recruitment exercise and felt it wasn't credible to formally forward their complaints to it.

Those who believed they had genuine cases should have cashed in on that window of opportunity to ventilate their grievance instead of feeding their gullible community with fabricated lies on why they were not successful in the exercise.

The status of the Plateau State Governor as a lawyer no doubt added value to his administrative skills and governing prowess contrary to the rantings of the cleric in that video where he tried to paint the Governor as not using his background to do justice to the Muslim ummah in the state through the appointment of the Judges.

It is equally important to emphasised that Plateau State has been very considerate of all variables when it comes to taking critical decisions on issues such as appointments generally.

A Government that is trying it's best in all facets as that of Governor Mutfwang should be encouraged to do more but not to face irresponsible criticism from myopic tantrums who sees, and says nothing good about Plateau.

The social media platform can be used as a veritable means of projecting developmental ideas even by religious clerics.

Unfortunately some of them have utilised it’s potency to control the thinking of their gullible followership for their selfish ambitions.

The earlier such characters retraced their steps back to the path of progressive thinking, the better.
