Her name is Kyerna Jonathan. She is 35 years old. Her story is one of raw courage, resilience, and a mother’s ultimate sacrifice.
On Monday, August 17th, 2026, armed terrorists speaking Fulani and chanting “Allahu Akhbar” invaded Bin Mper village in Kombun District, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. They came in swarms, and her home was the first they broke into.
Her husband, Jonathan Ishaku, was keeping watch outside. With no weapon to defend his family and no time to get them out, he ran into a nearby cornfield, praying the attackers would pass over his house. They did not. Their mission was to leave no survivors.
They shot off the door locks and stormed the room where Kyerna lay sleeping with her five children, firing round after round from automatic rifles.
With seconds to act, Kyerna made a choice. She threw herself over her two youngest children who were sleeping beside her bed, using her own body as a shield.
The gunmen kept firing for several minutes, hitting her multiple times in the back before leaving her for dead.
When rescuers arrived minutes later, they found Kyerna bleeding heavily and unable to move. But beneath her, the two children she had covered were completely unharmed.
Tragically, she did not have time to reach her three other children. They were killed in the attack. They were among the 25 people buried the following morning in Bin Mper village.
Kyerna survived. She was rushed to the hospital where she is currently receiving treatment for her injuries — a mother who took the bullets meant for her children and lived to tell it.
