BIM-MASSOB @ 26: A Journey of Faith, Tears, and Triumph
Every nation that breathes freedom today once began as a dream in the heart of the brave. For Biafra, that dream was reborn in 1999 through the courage of Chief Dr. Ralph Uwazuruike and the movement he founded MASSOB, now BIM-MASSOB.
It was not a dream built with guns, but with courage, sacrifice, and unshakable faith. It was a dream watered with blood, tears, and resilience.
For 26 years (1999–2025), BIM-MASSOB has walked through fire and survived betrayal, yet still stands as the living proof that Biafra lives.
1999 – The Dawn of a New Hope, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike launched MASSOB in Lagos, drawing inspiration from Gandhi’s non-violence. Ojukwu’s 1967 dream was reborn, this time without guns.
2000 – The First Blood, Joseph Okereke and Gabriel Ogu were killed by police bullets. Uwazuruike vows: “We will not take up arms.”
2001 – December Tragedies, On December 4, four MASSOB members were gunned down. On December 21, the National Secretariat in Okigwe was burnt down. Uwazuruike was arrested, but the movement refused to die.
2003 – Umulolo Massacre, March 29: Hundreds of unarmed Biafrans were massacred. Nigeria thought fear will silence Biafra—but instead, it fuelled the fire of resistance.
2005 – The Year of Raids, the Okwe headquarters was raided repeatedly. Uwazuruike was arrested 16 times. 1,581 policemen were deployed to hunt unarmed agitators. Yet MASSOB refused to retaliate.
2008 – The Walk of Faith and the Betrayal at Akabo, Ikeduru, thousands set out on a peaceful march from Okwe to Enugu, determined to prove that Biafra will rise without a gun. But at Akabo in Ikeduru, Governor Ikedi Ohakim deployed armored personnel carriers and fierce-looking policemen to block our path. The rally was forcefully terminated, yet the message resounds: Biafra’s march cannot be stopped.
2011 – Uwazuruike and 280 MASSOB Members Arrested, during a function in Enugu honoring Ojukwu, Uwazuruike and hundreds were arrested. Days later, President Goodluck Jonathan ordered their release.
2012 – Fresh Blood in Anambra, the Human Rights Writers’ Association condemned the killing of 16 MASSOB members by security agencies in Anambra.
2013 – The Horror of Ezu River, February, the world was shocked as dozens of Massob corpses floated on Ezu River at the boundary of Enugu and Anambra States. We cried to the world on many of the bodies of our members—arrested, executed without trial, and dumped like animals. It became one of the darkest stains on Nigeria’s human rights record.
2015 – Bloody Anniversary, on September 13, as MASSOB marked its 16th anniversary, police stormed gatherings in Anambra, arrested dozens and shot at some. Even in the House of God, Massob members were not spared.
Cross River Mass Arrests, in Calabar, State Security agents, police, and Civil Defence operatives arrested 47 MASSOB members, including the zonal leader Samuel Okah, during a peaceful march at Odukpani Junction. Once again, unarmed agitators were criminalized for daring to dream.
2017 – Remembering the Nkpor and Afara Massacres, the blood of IPOB and other pro-Biafra martyrs added to the river of sacrifice. Slowly, the world begins to listen.
2020 – Biafra on the World Stage, April 22, Admitted as the 46th member of UNPO.
October 17: CONIFA recognizes Biafra Football Federation. Biafra’s flag now waves in the international arena.
2020-2025 – A Functioning Government, now under the leadership of Elder Virginia Ubazuonu, the 6th Prime Minister of Biafra Internal Government (BIG) begins a new era of leadership. BIM-MASSOB’s 26 years of non-violence become the foundation of recognition of sovereignty by the UN, EU, AU and international diplomacy.
A Nation Built on Graves, Yet Alive with Victory, Behind every milestone stands a martyr’s grave.
Over thousands of members killed between 1999 and 2025. Homes burnt. Families destroyed. Leaders humiliated.
Yet, one truth remains: BIM-MASSOB never lifted a gun.
The world cannot deny it, through non-violence and non-exodus, Uwazuruike and his followers forced the international community to recognize Biafra, that's why we running a functioning government in Biafra land.
This September, the Ministry of Information calls every Biafran to:
1. Remember the fallen.
2. Celebrate the survivors.
3. Tell the world our story of victory through peace.
Because Biafra today is more than a dream, it is a government, a flag, a voice.
“Our nation is alive because we refused to die in silence. Twenty-six years of tears have now become the river of freedom.”
BIM-MASSOB at 26 is not just an anniversary, it is proof that no amount of bullets, prisons, rivers of corpses, or betrayals can silence the cry for freedom.
Biafra lives. Biafra rises. And Biafra will stand forever.
