Ban Of Onion Sales In The South Ill-Advised, Onion Farmers, Transporters Will Suffer Most

The Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria had announced that from today, Monday, the 7th of June, the group will initiate stoppage of Onion supply to the southern part of the country

The threats come as the group has accused the federal government of not having control over the insecurity in the country and also, not caring for the welfare of the group after they lost about N4Billion in the ensuing crises in the southern part of the country.

The announcement was issued by the chairman of the Producers and Marketers Association, Aliyu Umar, in Sokoto State.

Umar recalled that the FG had set up a committee that was headed by the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello to look into their complaints

The FG had through the committee, promised to compensate members of the group who had suffered huge losses in Abia, Imo and Oyo States during the and Shasha market crisis.

In order to make the FG enforce the promise of compensating the group, they threatened to stop supplies of onions to the southern region.

This move is very ill-advised and will not add any economic value to anybody.

The reason for the opinion is because onion is a perishable food item.

According to this report, Nigeria is one of the largest producers of onions in the world with a whooping supply of over 2million tons annually

It is also important to note that 100% of the commercial onions quantity is produced in the north.

Also, the majority of our northern brothers who are farmers, work based on the demand and supply term known as FIFO - first in, first out which means the more you keep perishable items without taking them out, there is every possibility of the product getting spoilt.

This also means that farming will have to stop as the farmers cannot harvest any produce until the ones already harvested
