‎In 1989, Costa Rican fisherman Gilberto “Chito” Shedden found a severely injured American crocodile on the banks of the Reventazón/Parismina River. The animal, later named Pocho, had been shot in the head and was emaciated and near death.
‎
‎Shedden took the crocodile home, fed him chicken and fish for months, and cared for him until he recovered. After Pocho regained his strength, Shedden released him into a nearby river, but the crocodile returned to stay near his rescuer’s home, eventually living in the water outside the house and being treated as part of the family.
‎
‎For more than twenty years, Chito and Pocho maintained this unusual bond, swimming and spending time together. Pocho died of natural causes in 2011, and the town of Siquirres held a public funeral to honor the famed crocodile.

Living whale spotted carrying 1800s harpoon proves survival beyond a century 🐋😲

A living whale was seen swimming freely with an old harpoon still stuck deep inside its body. Experts later confirmed the weapon came from the 1800s during peak commercial whaling. This meant the whale survived a violent human encounter and continued living for over one hundred years, stunning scientists and changing how longevity in whales is understood.

Researchers found that the whale’s body healed around the metal instead of rejecting it. This discovery challenged long held beliefs about how marine animals respond to serious injuries. It showed that some whales have incredible strength and recovery abilities, allowing them to survive harsh oceans, predators, and even human caused wounds across decades of life.

Beyond science, this whale tells a powerful story about nature’s resilience and human impact. Whales help balance ocean ecosystems by moving nutrients and supporting food chains.
