The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed over five shops that deal in cosmetic products within the cosmetic section of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex (LITFC).

NAFDAC enforcement officials sealed the shops for stocking and selling “Dr. Teal’s” brand of a range of cosmetics product, and samples of the cosmetics brand were seized.

Mr Ishidi Sunday, Chief Regulatory Officer of NAFDAC Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, addressed newsmen in Lagos during the raid on Thursday.

“We’re here today on this operation in respect of the complaint we received in the office on alleged faking or counterfeiting of Dr. Teal’s range of cosmetic products from the registered trademark owner and the market authorisation holder.

“Technically, any regulated product that does not have NAFDAC registration number is considered fake.

As it is, any product that is not registered, we cannot vouch for the quality and safety of the use of this product by the general public.

“Since it is our mandate as an agency to safeguard the health of Nigerians and ensure that all regulated products are safe and of good quality, we’re here on this operation; we can only confirm its safety of use through laboratory analyses.

“The shops will be unsealed after administering our necessary stipulated sanctions; we have sanctions for sale, manufacture or distribution of unregistered products.’’

He said that necessary sanctions would be given to violators.
“Our focus was primarily on Dr. Teal’s “Therefore, in order to avoid distractions, we’re considering the exigencies and the number of shops we have to visit, we focused mainly on the product in question.

Convicted billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, and his co-defendant Joseph Emeka, charged with murder and attempted kidnap have opted for plea bargain.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state lead counsel, Mr Yusuf Sule, informed the court about the plea bargain option on Thursday when the case was called for re-arraignment.
The case was called for re-arraignment before Justice Adenike Cokers of an Ikeja High Court.

NAN reports that Evans and his co-defendant were to be re-arraigned on an amended five-count charge bordering on murder, attempt to murder, conspiracy to commit felony, wit: kidnapping and attempt to murder.

Sule informed the court that the case was for re-arraignment but he was aware the defendants have applied for plea.

The prosecutor, however, said the plea bargain terms were being considered by the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr Lawal Pedro (SAN).

As the political turbulence in Rivers State takes a new turn, two commissioners have resigned from the cabinet of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The two commissioners who tendered their resignation letters and are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, are Prof. Chinedu Mmom, Commissioner for Education and Ben-Golden Chioma, Community for Environment.
Mmom had earlier today submitted his resignation to the governor through the office of the Secretary the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, citing toxicity in the administration of Fubara.

The letter read: “I write to formally tender my resignation as a member of the Rivers State Executive Council as the Honourable Commissioner for Education with effect from today the 15th day of May,2024.

“It is a truism that a calm, safe and friendly environment would stimulate efficient service delivery and enhanced productivity. It is however unfortunate to note that my current work space has become toxic and no longer guarantees a favourable environment to enable me realize my set targets for the Education sector in the State.

“There is loss of trust, animosity and sharp division among colleagues in the same cabinet which is unhealthy and very unfortunate.I want to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity to serve in your cabinet and wish your administration well.

Moments later, Chioma forwarded his matter, dated same 15th May, noted that his reason for resigning is because of the political crisis in the state.

He said: “I hereby tender my resignation as the Hon. Commission for Environment,Rivers State on this day the 15th May, 2024.

“I want to sincerely appreciate your Excellency, for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the State Executive Council. My decision to resign is due to the political crisis befalling our dear Rivers State and other personal reasons.

The embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on Wednesday, pleaded not guilty to the allegation that he unlawfully printed Naira Notes while he held sway at the apex bank.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, alleged that Emefiele had without authorization from former President Muhammadu Buhari, printed N684million Notes with the total sum of N18.96billion.

Besides, the anti-graft agency accused the former CBN boss of unlawfully approving the withdrawal of about N124.8bn from the consolidated revenue fund.

According to the EFCC, the defendant, acting in violation of law and “with intent to cause injury to the public,” okayed the printing of naira notes without the approval of both former President Buhari and the board of the CBN.

However, when the four-count charge was read to the defendant before trial Justice Maryann Anenih of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, he pleaded his innocence to the allegation.

While the prosecution counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, requested for a date for the commencement of full hearing in the matter, the defendant, through his team of lawyers led by Mr. Mahmud Magaji, prayed the court to allow him to go home on bail, pending the determination of the case against him.

Magaji, SAN, urged the court to either grant his client bail on self recognition, or to adopt previous conditions that were handed to him by Justice Hamza Muazu, who is presiding over another charge that is pending against him before the same high court.

He assured that his client would always be available to attend his trial, noting that the charge contained bailable offences.

In her ruling, Justice Anenih said she was minded to accede to the defendant’s request for bail.

La Liga president Javier Tebas says Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe will join Real Madrid next season.
The 25-year-old France captain announced last week he is leaving PSG at the end of his contract this summer, without specifying his destination, and Madrid are poised to sign him after years of failed attempts.

“He’s Madrid’s next season, yes,” Tebas told Argentine daily sports newspaper Ole on Monday.
“If they’ve signed a five-year deal, he has five seasons of opportunity (to win the Champions League).”

Mbappe is set to join a star-studded Madrid team led by Brazil’s Vinicius Junior and England international Jude Bellingham.

Los Blancos strolled to the Spanish title and are in the Champions League final at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund on June 1.

“(Mbappe) is one of the best players in the world, but Vinicius and Bellingham are there too, Madrid will have a great squad,” continued Tebas. “But that does not guarantee you will win leagues.”

Mbappe is PSG’s all-time record scorer with 256 goals, having joined the club from Monaco in 2017 for 180 million euros ($194 million).

With PSG he won six French league titles but failed to earn Champions League glory, finishing as runners-up to Bayern Munich in 2020.

By joining record 14-time winners Real Madrid, Mbappe would increase his chances of finally earning club football’s most prestigious trophy.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes it is time for a woman to take over as Germany’s president.

“I would be delighted if we elected a woman to Bellevue Palace in 2027,” the chancellor said.

Since 1949, Germany has had 12 federal presidents, all men.

Angela Merkel, who governed from 2005 to 2021, was the only woman who served as chancellor since the Federal Republic was founded.

Germany’s current president is Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The 68-year-old’s second and final term of office ends in 2027.

Speaking in favour of a gradual increase in the minimum hourly wage to 15 euros (16.2 U.S. dollars),

he said, “I am clearly in favour of raising the minimum wage to 14 euros first, then to 15 euros in the next step.”

At the same time, he criticized the Minimum Wage Commission.

“The employers insisted on only a mini adjustment.

Sat in a circle on the nursery floor, a group of Swiss three-year-olds ask a robot called Nao questions about giraffes and broccoli.
By the time these children become adults, interacting with robots may well be as commonplace as using a smartphone, experts believe. So, one Lausanne creche has decided to give them a head start.

Nao has been a regular visitor at the Nanosphere nursery on the campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology University since the New Year. He is what is called an “interactive learning companion” rather than a substitute teacher.

As the children were dropped off, Nao — who is only 58 centimetres (less than two feet) tall — stood on a bench to greet them at eye level.

“Hello, my name is Nao. I’m happy to be at the Nanosphere today,” he said, in a child-like high-pitched voice.

“I left my planet some time ago to come and meet you. I look forward to getting to know you and being able to talk with you in the weeks ahead.”

Some children walked straight past, some waved, pointed, touched his hand or simply gazed at him transfixed.

– ‘No squabbling!’ –
“What will the children’s future be like? Will they have to work with robots? Very probably yes,” Olivier Delamadeleine, director-general of the Educalis group of nurseries and primary schools in Lausanne, told AFP.

“So as we are in a place of learning it is important to get them familiarised early so that they’re used to working with robots,” he added.

Back in the class, teacher Eve L’Eplattenier and the 14 children sat in a circle on the floor with Nao in the middle.

Raphael Varane announced on Tuesday he will leave Manchester United at the end of the season when his contract expires following a three-year spell at Old Trafford.

The former France defender, 31, arrived at the club from Real Madrid in 2021 for an initial fee of about £34 million ($43 million) and has made 93 appearances, scoring twice.

He was part of the team that won the club’s first trophy for six years — the 2023 League Cup.

Varane, whose United career has been disrupted by injuries, has not played since a 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on April 4 but hopes to be available again before the end of the campaign.

“To you guys, supporters of Manchester United it’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt,” Varane said on social media.

“The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player was insane, the atmosphere was amazing.

“I fell in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents.”

The 2018 World Cup winner added: “Despite the fact we had a difficult season, I’m very positive for the future. The new owners (United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe) are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy.”

United issued a statement saying Varane had confirmed his exit, saying he had brought a “great deal of class and experience to the team”.

“It is unflappable work at the heart of the defence that Rapha is most recognised for, as he has shown his undoubted quality since joining the club,” the club added.

United have endured a nightmare season, languishing in eighth place in the Premier League with 14 defeats and they look unlikely to qualify for Europe.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Joe Ajaero said the labour union would disown the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi if he adopts the policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank if elected Nigeria’s President.
Ajaero stated this while speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday. He described the position of the NLC on the removal of petrol subsidy and electricity subsidy as ‘fixated.’

Ajaero added that the labour union would have it tough with any Labour Party president who implements the policies of the IMF.

The NLC President said, “He (Obi) is the presidential candidate of the Labour Party but does he own the NLC or the Labour Party? Why can’t you separate them?

“Whosoever is the presidential candidate or official of the Labour Party must buy into our projects. If he says he was going to undertake those policies, let him be elected and try such policies.

“Whether a presidential candidate of a party that Labour forms would dictate for Labour? The answer is known to everybody. The policies of Labour, the ideologies of Labour are clear and we are going to pursue it.

“If anybody is coming with another ideology, he is going to have it tough with us because that is not what we stand for.

“It (our approach) would have been the worst for anybody flying the flag of the Labour Party to come and implement these policies, to come and adopt the policies of the IMF and the World Bank.

The Nigeria Football Federation will, today in Abuja, stage an unveiling ceremony to formally present to the public, Mr. Finidi George, as the new substantive Head Coach of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles.

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, alongside Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Tinuke Watti, President of NFF Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and the NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, are among prominent personalities expected at the unveiling.

George passed up an opportunity to coach a second-tier team in Spain to return to Nigeria and lead two-time CAF Champions League winners Enyimba FC.

He won the tough-as-nails Nigeria elite division title with the People’s Elephant in his second season and has left the club in with a chance of retaining the title this season, with six matches to go.

When George formally bowed out of the Aba giants days ago, Enyimba FC remained in third place on the NPFL log, with 53 points from 32 matches.

They were four adrift of table-toppers Enugu Rangers and three off second-placed Remo Stars.

The 52-year-old spent 20 months as assistant to Portuguese José Peseiro from the summer of 2022, during which the Super Eagles qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and came within 28 minutes of a fourth African title in Cote d’Ivoire three months ago.

Finidi George, as a player, won 62 caps for Nigeria at the senior level. He won the Africa Cup of Nations gold, silver and bronze, and played in two FIFA World Cup finals.

He has the immediate task of picking maximum points from 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (home) and Benin Republic (away) in a few weeks.
