Mama Zuri finally told Malaika the old story.

Decades ago, a woman named Naya lived in Mbakala.

Her little daughter became sick and died.

Naya refused to accept it.

For seven nights, she sat beside her daughter’s

grave, begging the spirits to return her child.

On the seventh night, something answered.

But it did not bring her daughter back.

Instead, it offered Naya another bargain.

“If one child stays awake forever… your daughter will

never be alone.”

Naya agreed.

Nobody knew what happened afterward.

But from that year onward, children in Mbakala began disappearing.

The next morning, Malaika told Mama Zuri what happened.

The old woman became silent.

She asked only one question.

“Did the woman speak?”

Malaika shook her head.

Mama Zuri looked toward the forest.

Then she whispered:

“Good.”

Malaika asked why.

Mama Zuri replied:

“Because once she speaks to a child… that child will never sleep again.”

Malaika grabbed Kena and pulled him away from the window.

She looked outside.

Nobody was there.

Only the forest.

She sighed with relief.

Then Kena whispered:

“She’s behind you.”

Malaika froze.

Slowly, she turned around.

Nothing.

But when she looked back at the window, something had changed.

A wet handprint had appeared on the inside of the glass.

Malaika knew immediately…

Whatever was outside had never been outside.
