: Court to hear police suit against Sowore, others October 29

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 29 for the hearing of the suit filed by the police against Omoyele Sowore and other conveners of the protest held on Monday.
The suit, originally scheduled for Monday for the respondents in the ex parte motion to show cause why the interim order made by the court should be vacated, could not proceed.

The hearing was stalled as a result of the protest, which held on the same day, crippling the court activities at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Mohammed Umar issued an interim order restraining Sowore and others from protesting for the release of Nnamdi Kanu in some sensitive areas in Abuja.
Justice Umar barred the protesters from demonstrating around the A*o Rock Villa, National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square and Shehu Shagari Way, pending the hearing of the motion on notice.
The judge also made an order of abridgement of time “within which the respondents will respond to the application on notice to cause the ex-parte order be set aside on Monday, the 20th of October, 2025 at 9.00am,” before adjourning until Oct. 20 for hearing of the motion on notice.
The order followed the ex parte motion moved by the police lawyer, Wisdom Madaki, on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN), on Friday.
The Police Force, in the ex parte motion, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025, had sued Sowore, Sahara Reporters Ltd, and Sahara Reporters’ Media Foundation as 1st to 3rd respondents.
The force also joined the Take It Back Movement (TIB) for the Transformation of Nigeria, Or Any Form of Organization or Person (s) acting with Either Express or Implied Instruction, or Any Other Organization or group with a similar intention; and Unknown Persons as the 4th to 5th respondents, respectively.
In the affidavit supporting the ex parte motion, Bassey Ibithan, a police officer attached to the Directorate of Legal Services at Force Headquarters, Abuja, averred that if not granted, the protest might threaten national security.

NAN reports that Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, had planned to organise the protest for the release of Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Sowore, the 2019 and 2023 presidential candidate of African Action Congress (ACC), had mobilised for what he called a planned peaceful protest against Kanu’s detention on Oct. 20.
A number of persons were reported to have been arrested during the protest, including Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, who is billed for arraignment on Oct. 24 at a Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja.

Insecurity: Defend yourselves, Gov Bago charges Niger residents

Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has vowed never to negotiate with bandits or pay ransom for kidnapped victims, saying instead residents must be prepared to defend themselves against attacks.

…Vows never to negotiate or pay ransom to bandits…Ban mining activities in 8 LGAs
By Wole Mosadomi

The governor made the disclosure, when he visited the people of Rijau and Magama Local Government Areas of the state, whose communities were recently attacked by bandits in Kontagora.
The governor said: “The state has reached a point where the people must stand up and defend themselves because ransom will only turn kidnapping into a thriving business.
“I will not negotiate with bandits. I will not pay ransom. The moment we start paying, they will open shop on our heads and continue kidnapping people. The situation has reached a state of war that requires collective resistance.
“We are surrounded by enemies, but we will not give up. The constitution gives us the right to defend our lives and property, and we will do just that. There is no going back.”
Describing as “embarrassing and unacceptable” the frequent invasions of communities and the displacement of residents, Bago announced plans by his administration to recruit and train 10,000 members into the Joint Task Force, JTF, to help restore security across the state.
A statement by his Special Adviser on Print Media, Aisha Wakaso, said the governor has also declared a total ban on all mining activities across Zone C of the state, covering eight local government areas of Magama, Kontagora, Rijau, Wushishi, Mariga, Borgu, Mashegu and Agwara.
He said: “Illegal mining has become one of the major drivers of insecurity in the area, with miners often accessing forest zones unharmed while residents suffer repeated attacks.

“It is suspicious that miners can enter the forests freely, yet the bandits don’t touch them. I have now ordered the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, to arrest anyone caught engaging in mining activities.”
The governor assured victims of recent attacks that his administration would provide support, including compensation for families of those killed, medical treatment for the injured, and assistance for those who lost their sources of livelihood.

Fire guts section of Alaba Market in Lagos

A section of the Alaba International Market in Lagos State was engulfed by fire on Tuesday evening, destroying goods and property yet to be ascertained.
Videos shared on X showed thick smoke and flames rising from the furniture section of the market, located near the Ojo Local Government Secretariat in Ojo town.

An X user, Ikechukwu Ude, who shared footage from the scene, said the blaze started from “a little spark” before spreading rapidly through adjoining shops. In another clip, traders stood at a distance, visibly distressed as their shops went up in flames.

It was unclear whether operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service or other emergency responders had arrived at the scene at the time the videos were recorded. Eyewitnesses could be heard calling for help and accusing market security personnel of responding too slowly.

Hallelujah Challenge day 15 surpasses one million online views

The 2025 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, a global online praise and worship session led by renowned Nigerian gospel minister Nathaniel Bassey, has once again surpassed the one million viewer mark across social media platforms.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that figures from recent streams indicate that the combined viewership exceeded 1.2 million during the midnight session on Wednesday.

Now in its 15th day for the October session, the virtual event drew massive participation from viewers across continents, uniting Christians in fervent worship via YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

The Hallelujah Challenge, which began in 2017 as a spontaneous Instagram Live worship broadcast, has since evolved into one of the world’s largest online Christian gatherings.
From its humble beginning in Bassey’s living room, it has become a global phenomenon of collective praise, prayer, deliverance, and testimonies.
According to Bassey, the remarkable surge in online participation reflects a divine move beyond human planning.
“What began as a simple act of obedience to host a midnight praise session has turned into a global altar of worship.
“Every time we lift our voices, we witness God move in powerful ways that transcend borders and denominations,” he said.
Media outlets across Nigeria and beyond have confirmed the consistent rise in viewership throughout 2025, describing the Hallelujah Challenge as one of the most engaging digital faith movements of the decade.
The event, which typically begins at 11:59 p.m., features an hour of intense praise and prayer.

Each edition runs for a designated period, often culminating in a ‘Hallelujah Festival’, a physical gathering that brings together thousands for live worship, testimonies, and intercession.

Bassey, reflecting on the purpose of the Challenge, noted that its essence remains rooted in heartfelt worship and the power of collective praise.
“The Hallelujah Challenge is not just an event, it’s a movement. When believers gather in one accord to exalt God, miracles happen. That’s what we’ve seen since 2017, and we are only just beginning,” he said.
Since its inception, the Challenge has recorded steady growth, from tens of thousands of participants in its debut year to millions today.
Viewers have shared testimonies of healing, breakthroughs, and divine encounters, further amplifying the Challenge’s impact across digital spaces. As the October edition progresses, the momentum continues to build, with Bassey urging participants to remain steadfast in faith and praise.
“We’re living in a time when the world desperately needs hope. Through praise, we’re proclaiming that God still reigns and still answers prayers,” he said.

One-Day Vice President: Nigerian Girl Advocates for Girls’ Education and Rights

A young Nigerian, Joy Ogah, made history on Monday when she assumed the role of Vice President of Nigeria for one day, symbolizing hope and leadership for millions of girls across the country.

The symbolic leadership exchange took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during a courtesy visit by a delegation from Plan International, led by the organization’s Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Helen Mfonobong Idiong.

Welcoming the delegation, Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to advancing girl-child education and empowering women across Nigeria.

He highlighted ongoing government efforts, including the National School Feeding Programme, which provides millions of schoolchildren especially girls with access to education and nutritious meals. According to Shettima, the initiative is aimed at improving learning outcomes, health, and the overall development of the girl-child.

The Vice President commended notable female advocates such as Shuhuda Ahmad, Hauwa Liman, and Rahma Abdulmajid, describing their achievements as a reflection of President Tinubu’s belief in women’s capacity to lead and drive national transformation.

> “We will continue our partnership with Plan International to strengthen government interventions that promote girl-child education and women empowerment,” Shettima assured.

He further praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her exemplary leadership, describing her as a “trailblazer who demonstrates how education and empowerment can transform a woman into a national pillar.”

> “On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I reaffirm that this administration stands firmly for gender equality. We cannot achieve progress as a nation while neglecting half of our population,” he stated.

During her address from the seat of the Vice President, Joy Ogah expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent young girls across Nigeria. She drew attention to the troubling figure of 10.5 million out-of-school children in the country, more than 60 percent of whom are girls.

“Nigerian girls can become great leaders if the right policies are implemented to ensure their education, safety, and equal opportunities,” she said.

Ogah urged the government and relevant agencies to enforce laws protecting girls’ rights and to provide essential school facilities such as menstrual hygiene products, clean water, and nutritious meals.

“We must invest in education, safety, and the protection of every child’s rights. When girls are protected, peace will thrive,” she emphasized.

“I may be the Vice President for only one day, but the cause I represent will not end in a day. Our voices will continue to echo in policies, classrooms, conversations, and national budgets.”
