Air India Dreamliner Crashes Into Residential Building After Takeoff From Ahmedabad
Tragedy struck today in Ahmedabad as Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed into a residential building just minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The flight was bound for London Gatwick Airport with 242 people on board — 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
🕒 The plane took off at around 1:38 PM local time. Moments later, the pilots issued a Mayday call before losing control. The aircraft crashed in the Meghani Nagar area, hitting a residential hostel.
🔥 Witnesses reported a loud explosion followed by flames and thick black smoke.
👥 Onboard:
217 adults and 11 children
169 Indian nationals, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian
Flight crew included Capt. Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kundar
🚑 Emergency services are on-site, and rescue efforts are ongoing. Several people have been rushed to nearby hospitals. The number of fatalities and injuries is still being confirmed.
✈️ All departures from Ahmedabad airport have been temporarily suspended.
