It is often asserted in political discourse that the authority vested in executive office is immense at times, exaggerated to near-absolute proportions. A striking example comes from statements attributed to figures such as Hyacinth Alia, who has been quoted as suggesting that the powers of a sitting governor are virtually boundless, extending even to the ability to act decisively against perceived provocations without consequence.

Such assertions, however, invite critical scrutiny.

If indeed the powers of a governor are as expansive and unrestrained as claimed, one must then confront an uncomfortable paradox: why has this supposed authority not been effectively deployed to curb the recurring violence and tragic loss of life caused by armed herdsmen in Benue State? Why does this “limitless” power appear conspicuously restrained when it comes to safeguarding the very citizens from whom its legitimacy is derived?

This contradiction raises deeper concerns about the practical application of political power. Is executive authority selectively exercised mobilized with vigor against political adversaries, yet curiously subdued in the face of existential threats to public safety? Or does this reveal that the notion of “unlimited power” is less a reflection of reality and more a rhetorical device, detached from the structural and constitutional constraints that define governance in a democratic state?

Ultimately, the true measure of leadership is not found in proclamations of power, but in the capacity to protect lives, uphold justice, and inspire public confidence. Where these are absent, claims of absolute authority ring hollow.
