When Orogun Came Calling at Ughelli’s Iyheri Festival

By Foster Akpore

On Sunday 28 September, 2025, the drums of Ughelli beat differently at the Iyheri Annual Festival. They call not only the sons and daughters of the kingdom but also their kin across Urhoboland. This year, on the second day of the festival, Orogun answered that call.

The Okpara-Uku of Orogun Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Joseph Okorocha Emoghene, Osuokpa I, could not be present in person, but he was there in spirit. His last son and Omo Okpara-Uku, Prince Dominic Ochuko Emoghene, led the delegation to the palace of the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Evang. (Prof.) Wilson Ojakovo Oharisi III, JP. Alongside him walked Chief (Barr.) E. T. Opone, President General of Orogun Kingdom; Chief Ojevwe Oviri Andrew, Onotu-Uku of Umusu; Chief (Dr.) Godwin Ogberagha Otobo; Mr. Vincent Okpojevwa, Secretary to the Okpara-Uku; and Mr. Jackson Dakarabor, the monarch’s aide.

It was more than a courtesy visit. It was a reunion of kindred spirits. For centuries, Orogun and Ughelli have been bound by the Oghwoghwa connection, a cultural and historical tie that reaches back to their forebears. Through Orhiara, Ughelli’s sister, the two kingdoms trace their bond. The link has survived time, war, colonial boundaries, and the lines of modern politics.

"We are more than neighbours; we are family,” Chief Opone reflected as the gathering reached its high point. “Our kingdoms even share the same market days. This reminds us of a shared world, where each has its strength, yet together we form a whole.”

A defining moment came when the Ovie of Ughelli prayed for Chief (Barr) E. T. Opone, invoking blessings on his reign as President General of Orogun Kingdom. The prayer, said in the name of Jesus, was offered under the watchful eyes of his counterpart from Ughelli, Chief Samuel Akpimegi, President General of Ughelli Kingdom. It was a gesture that carried both spiritual weight and political symbolism, affirming unity between the two kingdoms.

Beyond heritage lies solidarity. Though Ughelli is in Constituency II of Ughelli North LGA and Orogun in Constituency I, the two kingdoms often find themselves speaking with one voice in the politics of Urhoboland. It is the Oghwoghwa spirit carried into the present age.

Prince Dominic Ochuko Emoghene captured it well in an interview with Oghwoghwa Reporters: “The bond between Orogun and Ughelli is sacred, rooted in blood and sustained by culture. Even in today’s political arrangements, we remain allies. What brings us together is far stronger than what divides us, and that is the enduring spirit of Oghwoghwa.”

The Iyheri Festival is always about colour, music, and memory. But this year, for many, it also became a story of kinship—of one kingdom rising to celebrate another, and of a bond that has outlived generations.

MY URHOBO ACTIVISM AND LOVE NA FOLLOW COME

My participation in Urhobo activism originated from humble beginnings, fueled by personal conviction rather than conformity. These photos are from my stint as National Union Of Urhobo Student's Queen(Oniemo̧) worldwide during university. This experience afforded me the opportunity to meet my digital husband, who started as a supportive friend before becoming my partner, ultimately resulting in our couplehood today, blessed with beautiful children.

My papa and mama na Urhobo and na the Urhobo land dem take birth and breed me, that is why i go do my best to promote this my beautiful cultural heritage anywhere i dey.
