Scrambling to her feet, she hid the key deep inside her wrapper just as the heavy thud of marching boots echoed down the corridor. The royal guards were flooding the upper levels, their torches casting dancing, panicked shadows on the stone walls.
"Search every corner!" the Captain’s voice boomed from the courtyard below. "No one enters or leaves the palace tonight!"
Alara knew she couldn't be caught wandering near the royal wings at this hour. Heart pounding in her chest, she slipped through the servant's passage, her mind racing faster than her feet. Who could she trust? The Queen had always been her protector, but this key proved that the danger was brewing right inside her inner sanctuary.
Reaching the safety of her small quarters, Alara locked the door and pulled out the key, holding it up to the dim candlelight. That was when she noticed it—a tiny, intricate crest engraved on the blade of the key. It wasn't just the Queen's crest. It belonged to a secret lineage everyone believed had been wiped out decades ago.
Suddenly, a soft, deliberate knock sounded at her door.
"Alara," a familiar voice whispered from the other side. "Open up quickly. I know what you saw."

"I know you are here," the stranger whispered, his voice smooth like polished glass but deadly sharp. He reached out a hand, his purple seal ring catching the dim light as his fingers brushed against the fabric of her hiding spot.
Just as he was about to tear the tapestry aside, a loud crash echoed from the main courtyard below, followed by the frantic shouting of the royal guards. The stranger paused, his head snapping toward the window. Cursing under his breath, he turned swiftly and vanished into the shadows of the corridor.
Alara collapsed to her knees, gasping for air. She had escaped with her life, but as she looked down at the floor where the stranger had stood, she saw something that made her blood run cold—a small, silver key left behind. A key that belonged to the Queen’s private chambers. The betrayal went far deeper than she ever imagined.

The stranger took a slow, deliberate step forward, his purple seal ring catching the dim torchlight. He paused, turning his head slightly toward the very tapestry Alara was hiding behind. "A bloodline doesn't just vanish," the stranger murmured, his eyes locking onto the velvet fabric. "And secrets have a way of breathing."
He began to walk toward her hiding spot, each footstep echoing like a death knell in the quiet hall. Alara squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her back as hard as she could against the cold stone wall, praying to the ancestors for safety. Just as the stranger's hand reached out to rip the tapestry away, a sudden, loud crash echoed from the eastern tower, drawing everyone's attention.
The stranger paused, his hand freezing inches from the cloth, as shouting broke out in the courtyard.

The stranger’s eyes narrowed into slits, his gaze cutting through the dim light of the Great Hall like a polished blade. He stepped closer to the King, the twin seal ring on his finger glowing an even deeper, angrier shade of purple.
"You lie, Your Majesty," the stranger whispered, his voice dangerously calm. "A bloodline cannot simply vanish. I can smell the royal blood in the air. If you will not give me the child, then the palace will burn until the ashes reveal him."
Behind the velvet tapestry, Alara pressed her back hard against the cold stone wall. Her hands were shaking so violently she feared she might drop the baby. As if sensing the danger, the sleeping infant let out a tiny, soft whimper.
Alara’s heart stopped. She instantly pressed her palm gently over the baby's mouth, her eyes wide with terror.
In the Great Hall, the stranger paused. His head snapped toward the very tapestry Alara was hiding behind. "What was that?" he demanded, taking a slow, heavy step toward her hiding place.
The King, realizing his granddaughter and the heir were seconds away from being discovered, drew his ceremonial sword with a loud clash to distract the stranger. "Your business is with me, outsider! Step away from the throne!"
But the stranger didn't even look back. He raised his hand, and a wave of dark energy from the ring slammed into the King, knocking him to the floor. The stranger reached out a long, pale hand and gripped the velvet tapestry, ready to tear it down.
Alara closed her eyes, praying for a miracle.

The tension is high! 😱 The King has risked everything to protect the secret, but the stranger is getting way too close to the hiding place. Will Alara and the baby be discovered?
