ABSU LAW GRADUATE RELATES HOW POLITICAL INFLUENCE AND POLITICS TOOK OVER MERIT UNDER PDP GOVERNMENT

By Victor Snow Chibuike

‎As a fresh Law graduate from Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), I had to wait almost four years before my name was eventually sent to Law School. This was not because I had any issues whatsoever with my results, the records are there, but because the late former Vice-Chancellor, in loyalty to the rascality that was prevalent under the PDP administration, admitted almost 300 students in my set, despite the quota of 130 allotted to the university by the Council of Legal Education.

‎It was even more painful because I was on the merit admission list for my set, yet I watched some of my juniors in the university proceed to Law School ahead of me.

‎At some point, the forwarding of names to Law School became largely political and dependent on how close one was to the PDP government. Similar situations occurred in other departments offering professional courses.

‎Prof. Nnamdi saw all of these things happen and, at the time, could not muster the courage to publicly criticise the government. Today, however, he has become one of the most vocal critics of Dr. Alex Otti.

‎We must stop this intestinal politics that we play in this part of the world. We must learn to call out wrongdoing irrespective of whose ox is gored.

‎To be clear, his concerns are valid, as I highlighted in my earlier post. But legitimate criticism must be rooted in fairness, consistency and decency, not sentiments or political convenience.

‎If it was wrong yesterday, it is still wrong today. And if we truly care about the system, our standards must not change depending on who is in power.

GOVERNOR OTTI BREAKS NEW GROUND, DELIVERS MODERN NIGERIAN AIR FORCE COMPLEX IN UMUAHIA

Abia completes the footprint of Nigeria’s Armed Forces in the State.

Umuahia stood still on Friday, July 31, 2026, as history was made with the commissioning of a brand new *Nigerian Air Force Complex* in the Abia State capital. It was more than the opening of a building. It was the delivery of a promise — that the right to security is non-negotiable for every resident and visitor to Abia State.

Hosted by the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, the event marked another major milestone in the administration’s avowed commitment to peace and security. For the first time, the full footprint of Nigeria’s Armed Forces is now present in Abia: the *Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks* in Ohafia, the *Nigerian Navy College of Accounts and Finance* in Owerrinta, and now, the *Nigerian Air Force Complex* in Umuahia.

"A VISION FOR COMPLETE SECURITY COVERAGE"

In his address titled "Security as a Right” Governor Otti described the project as proof of what is possible when national and subnational governments pursue a common agenda.

“Bringing the Nigerian Air Force to Abia is a dream come true,” the Governor said. “For us, the right to the security of our people is non-negotiable. Therefore, we have left no stone unturned in the push to keep our people safe from all forms of threats by the enemies of peace.

He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, for their support, and formally welcomed the NAF to Abia with assurances of full state backing.

But the Governor did not stop at the complex. He announced that the State Government has already allocated /120 hectares of land at the upcoming Abia Airport in Nsulu for a full Air Force Base, with plans for a modern facility to commence as soon as the runway is completed. Residential accommodation has also been secured for personnel across the capital to help them settle in quickly.

This forward-thinking approach underscores why Governor Otti is widely commended for his vision and determination to give all security agencies in Abia a true sense of belonging. He understands that to get the best from our security forces, we must first give them the best environment to operate from.

"A MARK OF QUALITY AND EXCELLENCE"

True to his reputation, Governor Otti did not just build — he built well. The new Air Force Complex was *tastefully furnished* to reflect quality and excellence. From the administrative offices to the operational spaces, the facility matches the dignity of the Nigerian Air Force and the standard Abia people have come to expect under this administration.

It is the same attention to detail that has defined the Otti government’s support for other security institutions.

Under Governor Otti, the *Aba Correctional Centre* has undergone major infrastructural upgrades, security fortifications, and expansion projects aimed at improving inmate living conditions and overall security.

At the State Police Command in 'Umuahia*, the government has carried out reconstruction work and constructed new internal roads — all to ensure that our police officers work in a decent and conducive environment.

These are not random projects. They are part of a deliberate strategy: support the Federal Government by giving security agencies the infrastructure they need to succeed.

"SECURITY AS THE FOUNDATION OF DEVELOPMENT"

Governor Otti was clear: security is at the heart of everything. “No real development can happen without a firm resolve to guarantee the safety of the population,” he said.

Beyond policing, his administration is attacking the root causes of crime through massive investment in infrastructure, manpower development, job creation, and economic revival. “Fighting crime begins with a frontal attack on unemployment and the introduction of systems that reward hard work,” the Governor noted. Slowly, young people are beginning to see they can make it without breaking the law.

He also looked beyond security, expressing interest in partnering with the NAF on education and manpower development for Abia children — proof that this relationship is designed to be long-term and symbiotic.

In his closing remarks, Governor Otti reiterated Abia’s hospitality. “Abia is home for all. Once you live here, you are from here,” he said. He invited NAF personnel to explore the State, interact with the people, and become part of the Abia community.

The commissioning of the Nigerian Air Force Complex is therefore not just about concrete and steel. It is about dignity. It is about telling every Abian, and every security officer serving in Abia, that their safety matters.

With this project, Governor Alex Otti has once again shown that leadership is about vision, delivery, and giving every institution the tools to succeed.

Abia is safer. Abia is better. And under Governor Otti, Abia will continue to lead.

OBOHIA ROAD: GOVERNOR OTTI’S ROAD REVOLUTION CONTINUES WITH SPEED (OPINION)

For years, Obohia Road in Aba stood as a painful reminder of neglect. It represented a signpost of sorrow and sadness.Newspapers.

Once a strategic link connecting traders, residents, and businesses to the heart of Aba, the road gradually deteriorated into potholes, gullies, and stagnant water. Movement became a struggle. Businesses relocated. Property values crashed. And for the people who lived and worked along it, daily life was defined by frustration.
