THE COURAGE TO SELL OFF EVERYTHING. The first reading and the gospel are joined by the theme of the search for treasure. For King Solomon the greatest treasure was the wisdom to enable him to govern his people well. For us the treasure is the kingdom of God. Who ever discovers it is determined to change their whole life to have it. The second reading tells us that God directs everything so that we may have the courage to make the right choice when challenging options are put before us.

Theme of the Sunday: PERSECUTION. This is the theme that binds together all three readings. The light of God disturbs those who prefer to live in darkness and they inevitably react by opposition. Persecution often troubled the lives of the prophets. The first reading reminds us of the prophet Jeremiah. In the gospel Jesus says that persecution is a kind of cloak that his disciples will have to wear if they are to be firm in their beliefs. The second reading compares Adam with Christ and confirms that in the struggle between good and evil, good will always triumph.

THE SENDING OF THE DISCIPLES. The first reading and the gospel are linked to each other by the theme of God’s choice of a people consecrated to him. In the Old Testament this choice fell on the twelve tribes of Israel and in the New Testament on the twelve apostles. God’s people, both in the Old and in the New Testament, are called to holiness, that is, to a life completely different from others. This life is to become a sign of salvation for everyone especially for those who live around us. The gospel describes this “holy” life of the disciples of Christ, a life full of works of love. The second reading links up with this theme. It speaks of the graciousness of God’s love, a gift that the disciples of Christ must learn to understand and spread.
