Abia Government Clarifies Youth’s Death in Umuahia Cult Clash
The Abia State government has provided clarity on a violent cult clash in Umuahia that resulted in the death of a suspected cult member and the arrest of another on Sunday, refuting claims of deliberate killing by its joint security force, Operation Crush.
During a press briefing on Monday at the Government House, Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu addressed the incident, which occurred at Imo Lane off Uzuakoli Road. The briefing followed an Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu explained that the clash began when a resident was attacked with a machete by a cult group, prompting a tip-off from a concerned citizen to Operation Crush. Upon arrival, security operatives encountered fleeing cult members. “One of the fleeing cultists was unfortunately hit by a bullet, supposedly fired into the air to disperse the group,” Kanu stated, emphasizing that the shooting was not intentional.
One suspect, found in possession of a firearm, was apprehended and is assisting police with ongoing investigations. The macheted victim is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital, while the deceased cult member has been taken to the morgue.
Kanu debunked misleading narratives circulating online, stressing the state’s commitment to transparency. He urged the public to disregard false reports about the incident.
In a separate announcement, Kanu revealed that the state will formally reintroduce sanitary inspectors, known as Ndi Ole-ala, on Thursday, June 26, 2025, to enhance environmental cleanliness efforts across Abia State.
