Among Ghana’s Akan people, gold-rimmed glasses symbolize leadership, wisdom, and spiritual protection.

Chiefs wear them with Kente and gold jewelry during important ceremonies.

These glasses reflect a blend of modern and traditional values. Seen as tools for vision, they also represent the chief’s ability to lead and connect with the spiritual world.

Gold plays a sacred role in Akan culture, symbolizing royalty, power, and ancestral ties. The glasses continue that legacy as part of the chief’s regalia.

“Akpan Chiefs” is likely a misinterpretation. The tradition of wearing golden glasses is rooted in the culture of Akan chiefs in Ghana.

Senegal has cancelled an LGBTQI-themed event backed by the UN and Dutch Embassy, citing national laws and cultural values.

The event, which included a film screening and panel talk, was halted after a government warning.

The foreign ministry said any such activities would face consequences and stressed that all diplomatic events must respect local laws.

Same-sex relations are illegal in Senegal, punishable by up to five years in prison. A 2022 proposal to tighten these laws was rejected, but current restrictions remain firm.

The UN and Dutch Embassy confirmed the event’s cancellation. The case underscores ongoing tensions between global human rights efforts and national laws in West Africa.

Cameroon’s 92-year-old president, Paul Biya, has declared his candidacy for an eighth term in the October 12, 2025 election.

The announcement, made via posts on X in both French and English, confirms speculation about his plans. Biya, in power since 1982, is the world’s oldest serving head of state.

His decision has renewed debate over Cameroon’s stalled political transition. Critics, including human rights lawyer Nkongho Felix Agbor, argue the country needs change, not continuity, and are calling for accountable leadership.

Biya’s health has sparked ongoing concern. Last year, he disappeared from public view for 42 days, fueling rumors. The government insists he’s fine but has banned public discussion of his health, labeling it a national security issue.

Opposition figures like Maurice Kamto, Joshua Osih, Cabral Libii, and Akere Muna have also declared their candidacies.

They’re calling for electoral reforms amid economic hardship, a separatist crisis, and northern insecurity under Biya’s rule.

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is set to build a deep seaport in Olokola, Ogun State, about 100km from his refinery and fertilizer plants in Lagos.

The project, submitted for approval in June, aims to streamline exports and expand his industrial empire.

Dangote describes it as “the biggest, deepest port in Nigeria,” designed to rival major hubs like the Lekki Deep Sea Port. It will support fertilizer, urea, and LNG exports, while easing the burden on existing jetties.

He also plans to build pipelines from the Niger Delta to supply gas for LNG exports, potentially challenging Nigeria’s current top exporter, NLNG Ltd.

For Dangote, it’s about long-term impact. “Africa can become a heaven within five years,” he said, if the right investments are made.

Meet Chief Theresa Kachindamoto from Malawi, also known as the “Marriage Terminator.”

When she became chief in 2003, she was shocked to see young girls as young as 12 already married with children. She decided to end the practice of child marriage in her community.

As leader of more than 550 villages in Dedza District, she introduced a strong rule against child marriage and made it clear that such unions would no longer be allowed.

She convinced 50 local chiefs to support her decision and fired those who refused to follow. They were only brought back after they agreed to cancel the child marriages in their areas.

So far, she has ended over 3,000 child marriages and helped many girls return to school.
