Did you know that in the history of the game of rolling dice, there has been a lot of modifications and changes? It however doesn't take away the fact that there has been some bizarre variations and elements in the past. Here are three we picked out for you;

1) Rolling bones - Did you know that in the beginning, dice were originally made from the ankle bones of animals? Early civilizations used bones, hooves, and tusks from animals like sheep to create dice with the bone material carved down to construct the shape and size. Small circles were inscribed on the ankle bones to delineate the differing sides.
2) All shapes and sizes - While everyone has used a typical six-sided dice when playing craps at a casino or a board game like Yahtzee at home, there are also weird shaped dice that are used in other games. Unusual shapes used to create dice include an octahedron, pentagonal trapezohedron, dodecahedron, and an icosahedron. Oddly shaped dice are often used in popular board games such as Dungeons and Dragons.
3)The dots have a name - This might come as a surprise, but the dots on the side of the dice planes have a name. The dots on each side of the dice are known as “pips”. On traditional dice, there are six sides with pips used to represent one, two, three, four, five, and six. Pips are usually colored black on white dice, and white on dice of other colors, although colored pips are also common.

THROWBACK THURSDAY

HISTORY OF LUDO -

The exact origins of this legendary game are uncertain, although the earliest proof of this game comes from the historic Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, where the board game was depicted in the form illustrations on the wall. This seems to suggest that Ludo was an Indian creation.

For centuries, people have played similar versions of the game we know as Ludo today. It was played on various mediums like cloth, slate, boards using seeds, shells, staves or dice. After hundreds of years, the game can now even be played virtually in the form of a mobile app, where players can play the game virtually from remote locations.

Ludo was known by many names across different times in Indian history, like ‘Chausar’, ‘Chopad’ or ‘Pachisi’. The game eventually became famous around the world in many other popular variations. For example, the Spanish version of the game was known by the name ‘Parcheesi’ and the Chinese called it ‘Chatush pada’ (meaning four cloth). It goes by the name ‘Ludo’ in Nigeria.
