On August 20, 1897, British doctor Sir Ronald Ross made a groundbreaking discovery: he identified the malaria parasite in the stomach of a female Anopheles mosquito. This crucial finding provided the first evidence that mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.
To honor this historic moment, World Mosquito Day (WMD) was established. Each year, WMD highlights the serious threat posed by mosquito-borne diseases and the ongoing efforts to combat these dangerous pests.
More than 125 years later, mosquito-borne diseases continue to have a devastating impact. They claim over one million lives annually and affect up to 700 million people each year according to WorldMosquitoProgram.org.
In 2024, we are facing the highest number of dengue cases on record, with over 11 million reported across 80 countries. Dengue, the fastest-spreading mosquito-borne disease, shows no signs of slowing, especially in the Americas, which bear the brunt of global cases. By the end of July, there were already more than 24,000 severe cases and over 6,500 deaths.
In Africa, malaria remains a significant public health challenge. In 2022, the WHO African Region accounted for approximately 94% of all malaria cases and 95% of malaria deaths globally. Countries like Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Mozambique bear the highest burden, with Nigeria alone accounting for nearly 27% of global malaria deaths
