On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a halt to student visa processing, as part of a tougher stance on foreign students in the country.

The U.S. government is targeting international students at American universities—canceling their visas and deporting those taking part in protests against the war in Gaza, accusing them of supporting the group Hamas.

Earlier, Rubio had already canceled hundreds of visas, and President Donald Trump's administration also moved to stop Harvard University from accepting foreign students.

A message signed by Rubio and seen by AFP tells embassies and consulates to stop scheduling any new student or exchange visa appointments until further notice.
