The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has officially proscribed the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), UNICAL Chapter over alleged misconduct and what the institution described as “unethical behavior.”
The decision, announced in a letter signed by the University Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Chukwuka Icha, and released through the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Effiong Eyo, takes immediate effect.
According to the management, LAWSAN UNICAL’s “reckless resort to social media, painting the University in bad light and disregarding extant laws, as well as the matriculation oath sworn to by students,” prompted the drastic measure.
> “UNICAL Management frowns at such unethical displays of insubordination and disobedience to constituted authority by students studying to become lawyers, advocates, and judges,” the statement read.
The University directed the current LAWSAN Executive Council to hand over all official documents and properties to the Faculty Officer of the Faculty of Law and to focus solely on their academic work.
Furthermore, management has warned all law students to desist from any LAWSAN-related activities, stressing that no act of indiscipline will be tolerated moving forward.
The directive also included a ban on staff and students addressing the press or making social media posts about university matters without express authorization.
The proscription remains in force until further notice.
