He trained to fly planes. Today, he rides an Okada to make a living.

Abdullahi Abubakar, a young Nigerian from Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State, reportedly saw his dream of becoming a pilot interrupted by financial difficulties.

He gained admission to the International Aviation College (IAC), Ilorin, in 2018. According to his account, the Kebbi State Government initially supported his training with about ₦2 million, enabling him to complete a year of training and obtain his Private Pilot Licence (PPL).

He reportedly performed well in his ground-school examinations and passed the relevant Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) examinations.

However, when he reached the circuit and landing stage of his flight training, the sponsorship reportedly ended. He needed another ₦1.8 million to continue, but could not raise the money.

Abdullahi says he has sought further assistance from the Kebbi State Scholarship Board since 2019 but has yet to receive the support needed to resume his training.

With his aviation journey on hold and the need to earn a living, he eventually returned home and began working as a commercial motorcycle rider.

His story highlights how financial difficulties can interrupt the professional ambitions of young Nigerians even after significant investment has already been made in their training.

Abdullahi’s journey is now a call for renewed support from relevant authorities, philanthropists and other well-meaning individuals who may be able to help him complete his aviation training.

From preparing for the cockpit to riding an Okada to survive, Abdullahi’s story is a painful reminder of a dream interrupted—not necessarily a dream lost. ✈️🏍️

Two graduates of Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi — Comr. Usman Saleh Yareema and Comr. Rasheed Muhammad — have completed their first degree programmes and are already looking ahead to the next chapter.

The graduates jokingly reflected on life after obtaining a degree, drawing inspiration from the ongoing Hausa series Ruwan Dare, which has captured attention with its portrayal of the realities surrounding graduates and life after university.

Rather than stopping at their first degrees, both graduates expressed their intention to continue their academic journeys by pursuing postgraduate studies without wasting time.

Seven master’s degrees. Four PhDs. And work linked to U.S. military drone technology.

Behind those extraordinary credentials is Dr. Osato Osemwengie, a Nigerian-born engineer and robotics expert whose career has taken him from Edo State to the United States.

Osemwengie moved to the U.S. in 1982 and built a career spanning engineering, robotics, education and unmanned systems. He founded Ubiquity Interface Inc. and Open Robotics University, according to published biographies.

Published sources have credited him with multiple advanced degrees, although the exact number of PhDs reported by different sources varies. A 2019 biography documented seven master’s degrees and three PhDs, while later reports have described him as having four PhDs.

He has also been widely reported to have worked on drone technology for the U.S. Army, alongside work involving robotics, unmanned aircraft and other advanced technologies.

His story has continued to attract attention as an example of a Nigerian engineer who built a career at the intersection of advanced education, robotics and technology in the United States.

He was feared by criminals in the forests, worked alongside security operatives, and became known far beyond his hometown. But the story of Ali Kwara did not end there — the legendary hunter was eventually recognised with a doctorate.

Alhaji Ali Mohammed Kwara, popularly known as Ali Kwara, was a renowned hunter from Azare, Bauchi State, whose name became widely associated with tracking and apprehending criminals.

From a young age, he developed his skills as a traditional hunter. Over time, those skills were used to assist communities and security agencies in pursuing armed robbers, kidnappers and other criminals across parts of Northern Nigeria.

His reputation grew beyond Bauchi, with accounts describing him as a fearless volunteer who worked with law enforcement while operating largely outside the conventional security structure.

Beyond his reputation as a hunter and crime fighter, Ali Kwara was also recognised with several awards and commendations. Reports state that he received honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of his services and contributions to society.

Ali Kwara died in November 2020, leaving behind a remarkable story that continues to attract attention: from the forests of Northern Nigeria to being recognised with a doctorate.

Abdullahi Murtala Muhammad has graduated from the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, with a degree in Software Engineering.

Prof. Obi Ekwenna-Davis, a Nigerian urologic and transplant surgeon, has helped make medical history after leading what has been reported as Nigeria’s first tele-robotic surgery and the first telesurgery in West Africa.

On September 19, 2026, Prof. Ekwenna-Davis remotely controlled a robotic surgical system from Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) in Mowe, Ogun State, while the patient was at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, about 500 kilometres away. (Pulse Nigeria)

The procedure was a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy, which involved removing a kidney affected by a cancerous tumour.

Unlike conventional surgery, the surgeon was not physically beside the patient. Prof. Ekwenna-Davis operated from a Toumai robotic surgical console in Ogun State, with his movements transmitted in real time to the robotic system at the Abuja hospital. A medical team remained with the patient in Abuja throughout the procedure. (Pulse Nigeria)

The operation lasted about three hours, with brief pauses to check the equipment and communication systems. Reports said the patient was in good condition afterwards. (Pulse Nigeria)

And no, the robot did not perform the operation independently.

The robotic system was controlled by a human surgeon. The technology essentially extended Prof. Ekwenna-Davis’ movements across the distance between Ogun State and Abuja, allowing him to operate on a patient hundreds of kilometres away.

The landmark procedure was carried out through a collaboration involving Redeemer’s Health Village, RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital. (APA News)

Who is Prof. Obi Ekwenna-Davis?

Prof. Ekwenna-Davis is a Professor of Urology and Transplantation and a robotic surgeon. He is also a co-founder of RoboMed Global.

His clinical interests include kidney and pancreas transplantation, general urology, minimally invasive surgery, genitourinary oncology and robotic surgery. The University of Toledo identifies him as a specialist in urology and transplant, with expertise including renal transplantation, minimally invasive surgery, genitourinary oncology and robotics. His work in robotic surgery also predates this Nigerian milestone. He has previously been involved in robotic-assisted transplant surgery in the United States.

Now, that experience has been brought into Nigeria in a way that demonstrates how advanced surgical technology could potentially connect specialist expertise with patients across long distances.

The significance of the procedure goes beyond one operation.

Tele-robotic surgery could potentially allow highly specialised surgeons to assist patients who are far from major medical centres, provided the necessary robotic equipment, connectivity, trained medical teams and safety systems are available.

For Nigeria, the procedure represents another step in the development of advanced surgical technology and local medical capacity.

From training and practising abroad to helping demonstrate the possibilities of remote surgery in Nigeria, Prof. Obi Ekwenna-Davis has become one of the Nigerian specialists at the centre of this historic medical milestone.

Professor Fanna Inna Abdurahman has made her mark in Nigerian academia as the first female Kanuri professor, and the first Kanuri woman to serve as Head of Department, Sub-Dean and Dean of a faculty at the University of Maiduguri.

Her educational journey began at Yerwa Central Primary School in Maiduguri before she proceeded to Federal Government College, Owerri, where she obtained her West African School Certificate in 1980.

She earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Maiduguri in 1987 and a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry in 1992, before rising through the academic ranks and becoming a professor in 2011.

A researcher in organic and medicinal chemistry and environmental analytical toxicology, Prof. Fanna has been credited with more than 120 publications in peer-reviewed journals, alongside a monograph and conference papers.

Over the course of her career, she has held several academic and administrative positions, including Head of the Department of Chemistry and leadership roles in research and university administration. She was also listed as Director of Research at Borno State University.

Her career has since taken another step forward. In September 2025, she was appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor of Al-Ansar University, following her tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Central Administration) at Borno State University.

From chemistry student to professor and university leader, Prof. Fanna Inna Abdurahman’s career stands out for scholarship, leadership and a series of pioneering milestones. 🎓👏🏽
