Professor Ibrahim H. Umar became Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano in 1979.

At the time, BUK had no Faculty of Medicine and no Medicine and Surgery program. The university faced challenges including inadequate infrastructure and shortage of lecture halls.

In 1983, he constituted a special Faculty of Medicine Committee under his chairmanship to develop a roadmap for establishing a medical school. The committee recommended construction of pre-clinical facilities and training of academic staff.

The Faculty of Medicine admitted its first students in the 1984/85 academic session. Early challenges included limited facilities and accreditation issues that required some students to complete parts of their training in Jos and Ilorin.

The program later gained full accreditation and has produced more than 1,000 medical doctors serving in hospitals, teaching hospitals, and public health organizations across Nigeria.

During his tenure, BUK also experienced major infrastructural development including academic buildings, student hostels, staff quarters, and road networks at the permanent site.

The event brought together former students, including Dala Executive Chairman Hon. Suraj Imam, who attended the school.

Attendees wore uniforms and caps, recreating their school days. Many arrived dressed as they would for classes decades ago.

Organizers said the gathering was meant to celebrate memories and strengthen bonds among old students.
